SAUGET, Ill. – Dariel Fregio and two relievers combined on a one-hitter and the Wild Things won another road series by beating the Gateway Grizzlies 6-1 Thursday night.
The Wild Things have won all eight road series this year and improved their record to 18-5 in games played away from Washington.
Fregio (5-2) allowed one hit and one run over six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.
The only hit Gateway had in the game was a solo home run by Abdiel Diaz to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Fregio then retired the next 16 batters he faced.
Washington tied the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning against Gateway starter Dylan Miley. Derek Gellos drew a walk, advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Evan Berkey hit the second of his two book-rule doubles.
Washington won the game with a five-run seventh inning. Gateway committed three errors in the game, each occurring in the seventh. They led to five unearned runs.
Ricardo Sanchez, who started the inning by drawing a walk, scored when Berkey grounded out to second base, giving Washington a 2-1 lead. An error on a ground ball by Caleb McNeely scored another run and Andrew Czech’s single was misplayed in the outfield, allowing McNeely to score and make it 3-1.
Wagner Lagrange then hit a two-run homer, just inside the right-field foul pole.
Christian James pitched two innings in relief of Fregio and Gyeongju Kim tossed the ninth.
Washington begins a weekend series Friday at Lake Erie. It’s a matchup of the top two teams in the Frontier League’s West Division.
