AVON, OHIO — Evan Berkey hit a lead-off home run, but that was all the scoring Washington would get in a 2-1 setback to Lake Erie at Crushers Stadium Friday night.
With the win, the Crushers moved a half-game behind the Wild Things for first place in the Frontier League’s West Division.
Washington fell to 27-15 while Lake Erie improved to 27-16.
Wild Things starting pitcher Kobe Foster lost his first game of the year but is still 4-1 this season. He allowed two earned runs on nine hits over seven innings. Foster stuck out 10 and walked 1.
The Crushers used four pitchers to get through nine innings with Matt Mulheam improving to 2-3 this year. He yielded one earned run on three hits over six with five strikeouts and two walks. Three of the Wild Things’ five hits went for extra bases, as Andrew Czech and Ricardo Sanchez doubled.
Christian Scafidi, Sammy Tavarez, and Trevor Kuncl pitched a scoreless frame, and Kunclk earned his 12th save this season.
Lake Erie scored what would turn out to be the winning run in the third when Jarrod Watkins singled to right field and scored on Logan Thomason’s triple to right center to tie the game.
Watkins scored the winning run on Alfredo Gonzalez’s single through the right side.
Gonzalez had three hits and Watkins two. Thomason’s triple was his lone hit, as the top three batters in the Crushers’ lineup accounted for six of their 10 hits.
The middle game of a three-game series between the top two teams in the league by runs allowed and ERA play Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Zach Kirby starts for Washington and Anthony Escobar will toe the rubber for Lake Erie.
