EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Dariel Fregio and four relievers combined on a five-hitter, J.C. Santini drove in two runs and the Wild Things defeated Evansville 5-3 Tuesday night in a series opener at Bosse Field.

Washington did all of its scoring in the first five innings and forged a 5-0 lead.

The Wild Things scored twice in the first inning against Evansville starter Zach Smith (0-3). Santini had an RBI single in the third and Wagner Lagrange, who was activated off the injured list, drove in Carson Clowers in the fourth to make it 4-0.

Santini added his second RBI single in the fifth.

Fregio pitched five innings, allowing four hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out six.

All of Evansville’s runs came on home runs. Austin Bost hit a two-run homer in the fifth off Fregio and Randy Bednar hit a solo homer off reliever Justin Goossen-Brown in the seventh. It was the only hit allowed by Washington’s bullpen over the final four innings.

Gyeongju Kim pitched the ninth inning for his fifth save. He had two of the seven strikeouts by Washington relievers.
