Two people were flown by emergency helicopters to a Pittsburgh hospital following a five-vehicle accident on Interstate 70 near Bentleyville about 8 p.m. Friday.

The crash occurred when a driver attempted to merge onto the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near King of the Hill restaurant and struck the rear of a Saturn sedan in front of him, pushing the car into traffic on I-70, where it was struck by a pickup truck, a state police trooper said.

Two other vehicles also crashed while trying to avoid the accident, and a sixth vehicle, a sport utility vehicle traveling west on the other side of Interstate 70, was struck by a tire from the pickup truck.

Police said the man whose vehicle struck the Saturn was not injured, though his vehicle landed on its roof. The woman who was driving the Saturn and a male driver of one of the other vehicles were evacuated from the scene by helicopter.

No additional information on their conditions was provided Friday night, but police said the woman suffered serious injuries.

Both lanes of I-70 east were closed temporarily. One lane was reopened while the accident was cleared, and the other lane reopened about 9:50 p.m.

Assisting at the accident scene were firefighters from Bentleyville and Fallowfield Township fire departments.
