We asked, and you responded.

More than $23,000 has been donated to the Observer-Reporter’s “No Place To Call Home” funds, launched earlier this year as part of a yearlong initiative to bring awareness of homelessness in Washington and Greene counties.

The newspaper established charitable funds at the Washington County Community Foundation and the Community Foundation of Greene County to raise money for organizations that provide services for the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless. To date, $17,907 has been donated to the fund in Washington County, and $5,202 has been contributed in Greene County.

In addition to donations from individuals, the Observer-Reporter held several fundraisers, including a purse auction in October that generated more than $10,000.

“Our goal for the homeless series was to create community awareness and to effect change through the community foundation grants, and I think we have exceeded our expectations,” said Lucy Corwin, director of news. “Thanks to the hard work of the staff and support of community members and businesses, we will be able to award significant grants to organizations in Washington and Greene counties.”

Nonprofit agencies that provide services to the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless are encouraged to apply for grants. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee composed of members of the newspaper series project team. Grant amounts will depend on proposals, with the minimum award being $1,000.

Deadline to apply is Jan. 24. Award recipients will be announced in March.

For eligibility guidelines and to submit a proposal to the Washington County Community Foundation, visit the WCCF website at www.wccf.net, then click on “For Grant Seekers,” and “No Place To Call Home: Homeless Fund Grant Application.”

To submit a proposal to the Community Foundation of Greene County, visit http://cfgcpa.org, then click on “Grants” and “Grant Priorities & Guidelines,” and “No Place To Call Home: Homeless Fund Grant Application.”

All grant applications must be submitted electronically through the websites.

Donations to the funds will continue to be accepted until Feb. 1, and may be made by visiting the Washington County Community Foundation’s website and clicking on “For Donors,” then “List of Funds,” and “No Place to Call Home: Homeless Fund.” In Greene County, visit the Community Foundation of Greene County’s website, click on “Donors,” then “How to Give,” “Donate Now,” and select “No Place To Call Home: Homeless Fund.”
