Washington High School’s football team seemingly had more turmoil off the field than on during the season. Two eligibility cases – one concerning lineman Zach Blystone and the other wide receiver Quorteze Levy – kept administrators, coaches and officials of the WPIAL and PIAA busy.
Blystone was originally ruled ineligible (athletic intent) by the WPIAL and PIAA after transferring from Charleroi. Blystone made a second appeal to the PIAA and was turned down. His family then sought relief in the judicial system, receiving a temporary injunction in Common Pleas Court. Blystone played in one game, at Brownsville, before the Washington School Board ruled he could not play football for fear the PIAA would impose forfeits if the temporary injunction was not made permanent. The Blystones then withdrew their petition.
Levy was declared ineligible to participate in football when it was found he was in his ninth semester of high school. The PIAA permits only eight.
Wash High was stripped by the WPIAL of five wins in which Levy played. The school appealed to the PIAA and the wins were restored. Washington finished second in the Interstate Conference and lost its first-round playoff game against Seton-La Salle.
