Peters Township native Alison Riske had a breakthrough year in 2013 and became one of the best stories at two of tennis’ Grand Slam tournaments.
Riske won in a major tournament for the first time when she reached the third round at Wimbledon. Only days before her 23rd birthday, Riske began play at the All England Club ranked No. 123 in the world but upset a pair of top-50 ranked players, Romina Oprandi of Switzerland and Urszula Radwanska of Poland, before being eliminated in the third round.
At the U.S. Open, Riske pulled off a huge upset when she defeated former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the third round, losing only three games in the process. A former PIAA champion while playing for Peters Township, Riske subsequently lost in the fourth round to former world number No. 5-ranked Daniela Hantuchova of Sloavakia.
Riske ends the year ranked No. 57.
