South Fayette rewrote the record books on its way to the school’s first state football championship. The Lions finished an undefeated season with a 41-0 win over Imhotep Charter Dec. 15 in the Class AA final at Hersheypark Stadium. It is the largest margin of victory in a championship game in PIAA history.

South Fayette junior quarterback Brett Brumbaugh finished his junior season with a WPIAL single-season record 3,897 passing yards and 41 touchdowns, including a three-touchdown performance in the state final. Senior wide receiver Justin Watson set the WPIAL’s single-season record for receiving yards with 1,568 yards.

With one more season to lead the Lions and 7,326 passing yards in his three-year career, Brumbaugh has a chance to become the WPIAL’s all-time leading passer.

The Lions (16-0) consistently beat the odds as they were considered underdogs throughout the WPIAL playoffs, including games against Beaver Falls and Aliquippa. In the WPIAL title game at Heinz Field, the Lions overcame early turnovers and a size disadvantage to defeat Aliquippa, 34-28.

Last week, Brumbaugh’s record-setting year was capped by being named the Class AA Player of the Year by the Pennsylvania Football

Writers South Fayette head coach Joe Rossi was named Class AA Coach of the Year.
