The history of The Meadows

• November 1962: Ground broken for first parimutuel horse racing track in Western Pennsylvania

• June 28, 1963: Track opens, operated by Washington Trotting Association.

• 1967: Romulus Hanover, almost scratched with calcium deposit in leg, wins first Adios Pace for the Orchids with Billy Haughton in sulky.

• 1983: Call-A-Bet and Meadows Racing Network introduced.

• 1986: Pittsburgh attorney Stuart Williams purchases track.

• 1988: Ladbroke Group PLC, based in England, buys track, renames it Ladbroke at the Meadows.

• June 1990: Ladbroke opens off-track betting parlor in New Castle, first of five such sites.

• 2001: Magna Entertainment Corp. leases track from Ladbroke, transforms Call-A-Bet into Xpressbet, an internet- and telephone-based wagering service.

• July 2006: Cannery Casino Resorts of Las Vegas buys track, retains Magna to operate facility in five-year management contract.

• Sept. 27, 2006: Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board awards gaming license to The Meadows.

• Nov. 16, 2006: Ground broken for temporary casino adjacent to track.

• June 11, 2007: Temporary casino opens.

• Sept. 5, 2007: Grandstand removal begins to make room for permanent casino.

• April 15, 2009: Permanent casino opens, temporary casino closes.

• July 8, 2010: Table games open to public.

• August 2011: Ground broken on $25 million expansion.

• June 2012: The Meadows dedicates $6.25 million investment in track construction, upgrades.

• December 2012: $2.5 million enrichment project completed.
