Remembering Bogart: What a catch!

Everyone enjoys a good animal story. And this edition of Living in Washington County magazine is chock-full of them.
There’s Kory Thornburg of South Strabane Township, who outfits her 3-year-old Chihuahua, Lola, with a bedazzled collar fit for a queen and paints her pooch’s nails bright pink.
Jackie Jones of Houston went as far as buying a trailer for the back of her bike so 12-year-old Auggie, a mixed breed dog who doesn’t get around easily anymore, can tool around with her without straining his joints.
And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Max, whose owner, Jon Cody of Washington, has taken steps to have his beloved Boston terrier cloned after he dies.
As I read their stories, I couldn’t help but recall one of my favorite dogs, Bogart, a Lab-shepherd mix who had the uncanny ability to persuade people to surrender whatever food they were eating.
He acquired his zest for eating as a pup. He didn’t stop at food, either, devouring assorted socks and a pink stuffed leather pig my husband bought me on a business trip. Fortunately, he suffered no ill affects from his indiscriminate snacking.
His favorite pastime was lounging on our front stoop and staring at the golfers practicing on the putting green next to our house. At the tiniest bit of encouragement, he’d be at their feet, gobbling whatever sandwich they had brought along. We learned later they were packing snacks with Bogart in mind.
He was talented, too, achieving his 15 minutes of fame in a photo spread in the Observer-Reporter after winning third place in a stupid pet tricks contest at a local mall. I’m not sure who looked sillier: Bogart or my husband, who taught the dog to catch green seedless grapes in his mouth as they were being spit at him.
He even won a spot in the 1991 Page-A-Day dog calendar: His framed photo still hangs in our kids’ bathroom.
Bogart died at the age of 11, but a day doesn’t go by that we are not reminded of him.
Enjoy this special edition dedicated to our furry – and a few feathered ones, too – friends.
