Eating well in Charleroi (and other polls) on Election Day

On Election Day, Holy Ghost Byzantine Church, 828 Meadow Ave., may be known as Charleroi’s Sixth Precinct, but it’s also a place for a home-cooked meal.
Through 6 p.m. today, voters and anyone with an appetite can eat in or take out, choosing from meatball, pulled-pork or hot sausage sandwiches, cabbage rolls, beef noodle or wedding soup, potato salad or cole slaw.
The Election Day dinner is, at many Washington County polling places, a spring and autumn tradition. Tuesday was the sixth year for election day eats at Charleroi 6.
“We do it the old-fashioned way. We don’t cut any corners. These are all old-fashioned recipes,” said one of the cooks.
Lillian Telega, for example, the stuffed-cabbage chef, uses her mother’s recipe and sports, under her flounced apron, a red T-shirt that proclaims her “Pierogi Queen.” Frozen potato-cheese pirohi are part of the take-out menu, and the sign on the freezer tells customers, there’s “nothing like Mrs. T-elega’s pierogies.”
Even on a sweltering-hot summer-like day, it was cool in the basement of the beautifully domed church, where voting was taking place a few yards away from doughnut-frying. At Holy Ghost, they make the yeast variety, airy and fluffy as the clouds floating above the Mon River.
Look for the ladies of Holy Ghost at the general election, Tuesday, Nov. 5, when the menu will be basically the same, plus lima bean soup. You don’t have to live in Charleroi’s Sixth Precinct to eat there.
“Not all our voters are customers, and not all our customers are voters,” Telega said.
