A representative from Satchels of Caring in late May distributed 30 satchels to the staff of Washington Health System to be passed out to cancer patients.
In 2003 Heather Knuth, a cancer survivor, created a Pittsburgh foundation to support newly diagnosed cancer patients and provide them with items that can bring comfort during the early stages of cancer treatment. The satchels are beautifully created and unique, made from high-quality interesting fabrics and then filled with items that are therapeutic and inspirational. The items are donated by many local companies and are stitched by local students and volunteers. Items include: turbans, scarves, directions to wrap a scarf, lotions, tissues, prescription drug assistance brochures, inspirational reading, relaxation music, journals, blank note cards and more. To date, over 7,400 satchels have been created and distributed in the Pittsburgh area, with the majority of the costs being covered by the fundraising efforts of the organization.
There are more than 14 satchel distributors and 27 schools that participate in the sewing and assembly of the bags, making the completion of each bag a team effort. Recently, the foundation expanded its services by offering men a black backpack.
Since 2011, Washington Health System has participated in the program providing satchels to patients on floor 6E. Approximately 20 bags are distributed monthly. A representative from the organization distributed a variety of bags for patients to choose from. The satchels are well-received and much appreciated by the patients.
