Every year since its foundation, Burgettstown High School’s Asian Culture Club has dedicated one day in the fall to stay after school, watch a movie and celebrate the close bond that students share. This year, however, the group switched things up a bit, and instead spent this time making bookmarks for the Students Rebuild Literacy Challenge
With the guidance of our teacher and sponsor Heather Dengel, the group produced roughly 30 bookmarks to mail in for the challenge, under the team name “Burgettstown Biblio Bandits.”
It was a lot of fun, and it felt great knowing we were doing something that would help students in need elsewhere in the world.
Students Rebuild, a program created by Bezos Family Foundation, benefits organizations dedicated to increasing literacy across the globe. Each bookmark made for the Literacy Challenge this year will be matched by a $1 donation by the Bezos foundation, and the bookmarks will be distributed to students aided by these programs.
The deadline for bookmark submissions is March 31. More information can be found on the foundation’s website, studentsrebuild.org. I would highly recommend students share this information with their teachers and friends – a single bookmark can make a huge impact on another student’s life!
