The exact numbers are conflicting – 11, 104 or 11, 084. The only thing that matters is the 11,000-yard mark. When Brett Brumbaugh surpassed that number during the PIAA Class AA title game, he made history. The South Fayette senior is the only player in the state to accomplish the feat and put himself in some prestigious company.
The styles of high school football differ by state. Teams in colder climates tend to run the football more, while the spread offense is prevalent in Florida and Texas, yet there are not many 11,000-yard passers in the United States.
Peyton and Eli Manning did not surpass 8,000 yards during their high school careers. Some of the better quarterbacks in NFL history did not sniff 10,000 yards in high school. Of course, how many career yards a player has does not always translate to success in college or the intangibles to make it at the next level, such as Travis Quintanilla of Refugio, Texas. Quintanilla, a 5-10 passer who is a freshman at Texas A&M Kingsvlle, is Texas’ all-time leading passer with 13,823 yards.
The nation’s career passing leader is Maty Mauk, the starting quarterback at Missouri. Mauk finished his high school career in Kenton, Ohio with 18,932 yards. He broke his brother Benjamin’s mark of 17,364.
Though some state’s records are not available online, I was able to compile some of the nation’s best passers. I looked at the states with a reputation as “football hotbeds” and looked at the record books. Some were not available, such as California, but here is what I came up with. Any way you cut it, Brumbaugh has made his mark and you will recognize some of the names from the NFL and college football.
