Purse auction to assist local families coping with dementia
Love to shop and help others?
Then mark your calendar for Nov. 7, when the Observer-Reporter will hold its second annual purse auction fundraiser.
This year’s event will be held at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino, and is being sponsored by the newspaper as part of its yearlong special reporting project, “No Longer Me,” targeting Alzheimer’s and dementia. All money raised will remain in Washington and Greene counties to assist local families who are coping with the disease.
Last year’s event raised more than $10,000 for the newspaper’s 2013 initiative, the “No Place to Call Home” series on homelessness in Washington and Greene counties. The proceeds were distributed to agencies in the two-county area that provide services to the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless.
This year’s auction will feature for bid more than 40 purses – many designer and all brand-new. If jewelry, food and wine are to your liking, there will be assorted vendors on hand, and a Chinese auction will be featured as well. Former Washington County Commissioner Bracken Burns will serve as master of ceremonies, and Tripp Kline will return as event auctioneer.
Tickets will go on sale in September. Purchase details will be announced in the newspaper and on the O-R’s Facebook page.
The newspaper has partnered with the Washington County Community Foundation and the Community Foundation of Greene County to establish charitable funds connected to the Alzheimer’s project. At the culmination of the series, all money raised will be divided between the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter and Southwestern Pennsylvania Area Agency on Aging to support Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers in the two-county area.
