New Alzheimer’s series coming to the O-R

“Alzheimer’s is a cruel, mean disease. And in the end, it always wins.”
Those were the tearful words of an Observer-Reporter staff member’s uncle as he eulogized his wife. Her long battle with Alzheimer’s, which over a period of five years had robbed her memory, was finally over. It was hard to watch her go from a sweet, chatty woman to being unable to speak or feed herself.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1 in 3 seniors die from Alzheimer’s or a dementia-related disease. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. There are few people not directly affected by the disease.
In the coming months, the staff of the Observer-Reporter will present a special Alzheimer’s series called “No Longer Me.” Each month, we will focus on topics such as defining the disease, care options, caregiver issues, treatments, research, managing finances and more. And we are honored to be trusted to share the stories of local residents whose lives have been touched by this incurable disease.
Our first installment in the series will be published Sunday, March 30, with a preview video and web page launching Monday, March 24.
As part of the series, the newspaper will lead a community fund drive to help provide respite support for caregivers. Details of the campaign will be announced.
