Hospitals’ ‘Go Red, Washington County’ promotes heart health

While heart disease is both preventable and controllable, it remains the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. How healthy is your heart and your lifestyle?

The three hospitals in Washington County will again team up in Feburary during National Heart Month for a countywide education and awareness effort called “Go Red, Washington County.”

Canonsburg Hospital, Monongahela Valley Hospital and Washington Health System will each host events at their respective facilities on Feb. 26 at various times. Offerings include speakers, educational demonstrations, giveaways and more.

At Canonsburg Hospital, Go Red events will be held in the McNary Conference Center, 100 Medical Blvd., Canonsburg:

• 4 to 6:30p.m. – Screenings for blood pressure and body mass index chiropractic chair massage, with posture and functional movement screenings by Tyson Swigart and staff, Southpointe Chiropractic and Fitness.

• 4:30 p.m. – “Women and Heart Disease: What You Need to Know,” Dr. Travis Wilson, cardiologist, Canonsburg Hospital.

• 5 p.m. – Tai chi for stress relief and health, talk and demonstration by Gurney Bolster of Tai Chi for Health.

• 5:30 p.m. – “Nutrition for a Healthy Heart,” Mark Davis, nutritionist, Jefferson Hospital.

• 6 p.m. – “Small Changes, Big Results for Your Health,” Margie Webb, owner of “Ahh … A Massage,” McMurray.

All attending the Canonsburg Go Red event will be eligible to win an iPad Mini, donated by TownView Health and Rehab. The drawing will be held at the end of the evening and the winner need not be present.

For a donation of at least $5 to the American Heart Association, Washington County, Canonsburg Hospital will be giving away a limited number of red fleece gloves or headbands.

At Monongahela Valley Hospital, events will be held at the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center on the hospital campus, 1163 Country Club Road, Monongahela:

• 3 to 4:30 p.m. – Free blood pressure screenings and stroke risk assessments.

• 3:30 p.m. – Heart Healthy cooking demonstration by MVH executive chef Phoebe DiBello and clinical nutrition manager Michele Pfarr, with samples afterward.

• 4:30 p.m. – Innovations in Medicine talk on stroke by neurologist Dr. Pushpa Kumari.

• 6 p.m. – Keynote speaker: Craig Wolfley, former Pittsburgh Steeler, martial arts instructor, former sumo competitor and TV and radio personality.

MVH also will have healthy refreshments, giveaways and a raffle. Participants must RSVP by calling 724-258-1333. Staff at MVH will sell Go Red Washington County gloves and headbands during the event.

Washington Health System events will be held Feb. 24 and 26 at the Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center, 240 Wellness Way, Washington. Events on Feb. 24 include:

• 5 to 8 p.m. – Washington Go Red Girls Night Out at Spa Harmony. Enjoy a mini spa day while raising money. Choose three mini spa services: massage, reflexology, facials, manicures or pedicures. Cost is $30 per person. RSVP by Feb. 18 by calling 724-250-5238.

Events on Feb. 26 include:

• 6 to 10 a.m. – Free health screenings for the first 100 people; screenings are $10 per person after that. Screenings include blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol levels, glucose and triglycerides. Participants must RSVP by calling 724-250-5210 and must fast for 12 hours before the test.

• 9 to 10 a.m. – Heart Smart Decisions panel discussion with cardiologist, dietitian and exercise physiologist.

• 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. – Heart Healthy Mini Stations, 10- to 15-minute mini heart healthy sessions on a variety of topics, including fitness, nutrition and stress management.

• 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. – Zumbathon. Those who make a minimum $5 donation will receive a free gift. All donations will be sent to the American Heart Association.

There also will be basket raffles, with all proceeds going to the AHA. Washington Health System also will sell Go Red T-shirts and paper hearts in February, and hospital staff will involve employees with a pie-in-the-doctor’s-face contest and an employee heart education event with games and prizes.
