With National Signing Day less than one week away, new Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi and his coaching staff are scrambling to fill out the Panthers’ 2015 recruiting class.
One of their recent stops was Ringgold High School to meet Rams senior Nico Law, who established himself as one of the best athletes in the WPIAL.
The 6-1, 190-pound dual-threat quarterback and safety had a major impact for the Rams in 2014, leading them to the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals. His statistics took a hit last fall under new head coach Nick Milchovich, who implemented a run-first offense using Chacar Berry and Brendan Small, but Law was prolific on btoh sides of the ball.
He recently gave Gannon University a verbal commitment, but Narduzzi and three of his assistants visited the school Wednesday to meet Law and get a feel for his interest in the Panthers’ program.
People will point to Law’s size as the reason he has been under recruited, which is valid, but he’s an incredible athlete with a ton of potential. Getting him into a college weight lifting program would help him build muscle to withstand the rigors of a full Division I season.
Narduzzi is in a unique position. Pitt’s roster is filled with young talent, which allows them the ability to offer scholarships to prospects some may deem as “projects.” Law has the ability to play multiple positions, which is always helpful for a new coach.
They can try him at safety, corner back, wide receiver or have him work at quarterback on the scout team to offer a mobile look to the first-team defense.
I spoke to Milchovich recently about his views on Law’s potential at the next level. He agreed with my assessment. Law can play several positions and has the knowledge to succeed in college.
“Collegiately, going into this year, he was very hard to get a good analysis on because he only played quarterback, but he could probably play six positions in college,” Milchovich said. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Whatever the coaches see and want him to do, he certainly has the athletic ability to do it.”
It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. Law has not been offered a scholarship and while there are less than seven days until athletes sign on the dotted line, that is plenty of time for an offer to be made.
Narduzzi would be wise to gain a player who could contribute on offense, defense and special teams. With a young roster, Law would have plenty of time to gain weight and find his niche with the Panthers.
