Fish sandwich, sans condiments, at St. Hilary Catholic Church, Washington.

The hand-breaded haddock didn’t flounder on any count Ash Wednesday at St. Hilary Catholic Church in Washington.

It was a delectable entrée that went down easily, left no aftertaste and caused no after-effects. The serving was generous, piled high on an oblong bun. Compliments to the chefs.

My side of coleslaw was a bit too creamy, but it had a pleasantly sweet flavor, unlike the bitter-tasting slaw served at too many fish fries. I wanted macaroni and cheese instead, but it wasn’t available despite being on the menu.

All told, though, it was a positive experience at a price that likewise was palatable: $8 for fish, slaw and Diet Coke.
