VFW Post 8303, Lawrence
Some fish sandwiches claim to be a “whale of a cod,” but the fish sandwich at Bioni-Yeckel VFW Post 8308 in Lawrence might take the title this year.
At over a foot long and more than an inch thick, this crispy battered fish sandwich is a monster that I couldn’t finish in one sitting. And at $8.75 with a hefty side of french fries and coleslaw, this might be the best deal I’ve seen so far this fish-fry season.
My only complaint was with the bun. I’m all for a giant slab of fish that hangs out of the bun, but this sandwich came on a round sandwich bun, which made hand eating tough. With that said, this was one of the best fish sandwiches I’ve had in a while.
While there, I also tried the macaroni and cheese, which was restaurant-style with elbow macaroni smothered in golden-yellow goodness. The fish-fry menu also includes baked fish, shrimp, chicken tenders, cheese sticks and more, so there’s something for everyone.
VFW Post 8308 is open to the public for fish-fry dinners from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays through Good Friday. While there, get yourself a beer and play some pool, but be aware that they do allow smoking.
