In addition to its panko-crusted fish, St. Mary’s fish-fry menu options include lobster rolls, crab cakes, scallops, baked fish and seafood pizza.

If you’ve been anywhere near Southpointe or Cecil in the past couple of weeks, you’ve noticed the signs for St. Mary’s fish fry, and it would do you good to follow them. Tucked away behind a picturesque tree line in the middle of Cecil, St. Mary’s is definitely worth the drive.

The church’s biggest seller, the fried-fish sandwich, is a thick, panko-crusted cut of flaky cod. The breading is crunchy and flavorful with Italian seasonings, and the bun comes fresh that morning from Breadworks. I appreciated the less greasy panko crust, which was a welcome change from slip-out-of-the-batter fish sandwiches you usually see at fish fries. For a healthier alternative, St. Mary’s also serves baked cod.

I also sampled the lobster roll, made with big chunks of lobster smothered in mayo on a hot dog bun – yum! The macaroni and cheese was creamy and warm, and the french fries were a tasty treat that I suspect were twice-fried since they had the crunchy outer crust. The crab cakes were delicious – a pair of hockey puck-sized lump crab cakes with little filler – and the sea scallops, big and lightly cooked in oil, were melt-in-your-mouth tender.

Also on the menu are traditional fish-fry fare, such as pierogies, cabbage and noodles, seafood pizza with lobster, crab and scallops, baked salmon, jumbo and popcorn shrimp, albacore tuna melt sandwiches and jalepeño poppers.

While at this gourmet fish fry, get yourself an Iron City beer or glass of wine (for a donation), a yummy homemade dessert and a St. Mary’s fish-fry T-shirt.
