A fish sandwich, fries and coleslaw are the meal deal at the Sacred Heart Church of Immaculate Conception fish fry.

CLAYSVILLE – Don’t tell them I told you this, but I think the folks at Sacred Heart Church of Immaculate Conception in Claysville aren’t charging enough for their fish sandwich. At just $5.25 for a fish sandwich with fries and coleslaw, they’re practically giving it away.

While this fish sandwich is a little smaller than those at most fish fries, it packs a tasty punch. The seasoning on the basic bread-crumb breading isn’t overpowering, and the perch fish has a nice not-too-fishy flavor. What really makes this sandwich is the tartar sauce – the tartar sauce and cocktail sauce are both made in-house – and have a home-style taste you can’t get out of a jar. They also make their own coleslaw, which you can get with or without onions. If you’re an onion fan, definitely try it with onions.

While there, I also tried the homemade noodles and cabbage. Volunteers start the cabbage and noodles at 5 a.m. every Friday, and it was by far my favorite noodles and cabbage I’ve had at the fish fries I have visited. The noodles and cabbage ratio was about 50/50, and the cabbage flavor was really apparent. Thick and warm, this is the definition of comfort food.

If you’re not a fan of fried fish, Sacred Heart also has a baked fish or fried shrimp dinner, as well as an army of tasty desserts, including chocolate cake, Dutch apple pie and lemon meringue. Stop by Friday, but don’t tell them they aren’t charging enough for the fish or you’ll ruin it for the rest of us!
