The WPIAL baseball championships will stay in Washington County for the foreseeable future.
Despite the PIAA expanding to six classifications, the games will continue to be held at Consol Energy Park, the home of the Washington Wild Things in North Franklin Township.
According to Wayne Herrod, special events and operatoins manager at Consol Energy Park, the ballpark still has a contract with the WPIAL through 2020 to host the annual district title games. The only question is whether to hold the six games over two or three days.
The PIAA announced in November that it would expand to six classifications in football, basketball, softball and baseball following the 2015-16 academic year.
The shift will bring changes to some sites for the WPIAL’s title games in those sports, but baseball will not be one of them. There is still no word on whether California University will continue to host the softball championships and the basketball championships will likely be held at the Petersen Events Center on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus.
The WPIAL announced in February that its top four football championship games will continue to be held at Heinz Field, but the 2A and 1A title games will be held at a different site.
