The back deck of Aaron Carson's home in Canton Township has been hosting a family of gray catbirds this summer. Aaron said the normally shy birds have been very visible while raising their young. Though they have become used to human presence, they still sometimes become disturbed and commence their signature mewing.

To bark, or not to bark? Olive, "granddog" of Walt and Tammy Herbst of McDonald, wasn't sure what to do when confronted with an unexpected visitor on the back porch. Tammy Herbst, who took the photo, said the 5-foot blacksnake usually can be found in the old milk house on the property.
