A healthy lifestyle, it turns out, includes more than eating well and exercising regularly.

Mental fitness is an important component.

With that in mind (no pun intended), the Center for Fitness and Health in Carroll Township has joined with a Coraopolis-based company to help members keep tabs on brain health and performance.

The Center now offers RC21X, an advanced brain-health game and performance-monitoring tool that enables people to check their brain performance through a series of 15 game-like activities, and compare the results to a baseline score established during an initial test.

The brain health checkup is designed to be challenging and fun, and can be completed in about 12 minutes.

Named for baseball legend and humanitarian Roberto Clemente, RC21X is based on 50 years of scientific research and development in the fields of human performance measurement, neurology, psychology, kinesiology, bioengineering, and the science of General Systems Performance Theory.

“We’re always looking to offer more to our members, and we want to be a total wellness center, not just a fitness center,” said Don Doyle, general manager of the Center for Fitness and Health. “We got excited about this program because this is another area of health where we can offer members help in their efforts to achieve total wellness. You can actually see where your strengths and challenges are with this program, and then it offers tools so that you can go in as often as you want to play games to see if you can make improvements.”

Each game session uses objective measures and data-based records to create a unique Brain Performance Profile report for the individual.

Doyle said health care professionals and the general population are using RC21X to make better, fact-based decisions regarding brain health during all stages of life, including aging.

The Center for Fitness and Health has an active senior population, and many older members worry about the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Doyle said.

By knowing how well their brain is functioning, people can better stave off age-related cognitive decline over the years, or seek medical treatment if necessary.

“We are looking at this as a way for our membership to be cognizant of another part of wellness. We cover nutrition and rehabilitation from injuries and ailments, and this is a way to be proactive and say total wellness includes brain health, too,” said Doyle, noting the program has been well-received.

Doyle recommends that members complete RC21X at home, or at a location where there are few distractions. Members can log on through the Center for Fitness and Health’s account. The center offers its members a 20 percent discount on a one-year RC21X subscription.
