At The Meadows
Fox Valley Charm stalked the leader, Shady Caroline, from the pocket, then kicked by in the Lightning Lane to capture Monday’s $15,000 Filly & Mare Not Listed Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.
Shady Caroline threw down a sharp 1:24.1 three-quarters that discouraged the outside challengers. But she couldn’t shake Fox Valley Charm, who knifed inside for Dan Rawlings and defeated her by a neck in 1:52.1. Shark Gal was a ground-saving third.
Dirk Simpson trains Fox Valley Charm, a 5-year-old daughter of Yankee Skyscraper-Fox Valley Cherub who lifted her lifetime bankroll to $210,735, for Peter Karras.
Dave Palone piloted three winners, including a pair for trainer Ron Burke, on the 13-race card.
Parsons wins weekly PSAC award
For the second time this season, California senior forward Shatara Parsons was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Athlete of the Week.
Parsons, who averaged 25.3 points, eight rebounds and more than three blocks per game in the Vulcans three games last week, eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in Saturday’s 61-38 victory over Bloomsburg.
She is the 28th player in school history to achieve that feat.
Trest continues strong start
Seton Hill freshman guard Cheyenne Trest was awarded the PSAC West Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week honors for the fourth time this season.
Trest averaged 13.5 points and five rebounds in two crossover games this week for Seton Hill, a loss against East Stroudsburg and a win against West Chester.
Trest is the second-leading scorer for the Griffins, averaging 14.4 points per game.
In college basketball

Nate Reuvers added 11 points and Ethan Happ grabbed 10 rebounds for the Badgers (4-5, 1-1 Big Ten), who snapped a two-game losing streak when a potential go-ahead 3-pointer from Penn State’s Tony Carr bounced off the rim with two seconds to play.
Mike Watkins scored a career-high 22 points for Penn State (7-3, 1-1 Big Ten). Carr added 16 points and Shep Garner made 13 for the Nittany Lions who were trying for their first 2-0 start in conference play since 2007.
Mike Lewis II scored 29 points on 10-of-12 shooting, Eric Williams Jr. added a career-high 24 points to go with 11 boards and Duquesne beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 86-61 on Monday night.
Lewis was 6 of 7 from 3-point range and Williams was 4 of 6. It was Williams’ third double-double of the season.
The Dukes (3-3) made 14 of 29 (48.3 percent) from the arc and had a 44-27 edge in rebounding. Tarin Smith added 10 points and Kellon Taylor had eight rebounds and seven assists.
