At The Meadows
Homepage moved relentlessly first over and pulled off the 12-1 upset in Tuesday’s $15,000 Filly & Mare Winners Over $10,000 Life Handicap Trot at The Meadows.
Homepage was fourth at the half when Ronnie Wrenn, Jr. sent her after the leader, Panana Republic. The 7-year-old daughter of Tom Ridge-Inside Edition cleared easily and held off the late charge of Classical Annie to down her by 2-¼ lengths in 1:55.3 over a “good” surface. Fancytucky rallied for show.
Andy Rickert trains Homepage, who now boasts $347,897 in career earnings, for Murdock Racing Stable.
Jim Pantaleano collected three wins on the 13-race card.
W&J survives
4th-quarter scare
The Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team fended off a 15-point run and defeated Carnegie Mellon 51-48 in a nonconference game.
After taking a 16-point lead, 49-33, into the fourth quarter, Katharine Higgins connected on a three-pointer with 3:45 remaining in the game to trim the deficit to 49-48.
With more than three-and-a-half minutes of no scoring, W&J senior guard Taley Dunaway scored the Presidents first points of the final quarter on two free throws with five seconds remaining.
Junior forward Danielle Parker, a Canon-McMillan graduate, recorded a double-double with 16 points and 16 assists. Both were team highs for W&J (3-0, 7-0).
Carnegie Mellon (5-2) was paced by a game-high 25 points from Makayla Filliere.
FSU lands Oregon’s Taggart
Willie Taggart is returning to the Sunshine State, this time as head football coach at Florida State.
Taggart has agreed to become Florida State’s next coach, replacing Jimbo Fisher. Taggart told his Oregon players during a team meeting on Tuesday that he is leaving.
Florida State has called a news conference for Wednesday morning to introduce Taggart.
The 41-year old Bradenton native coached at South Florida for four seasons before going to Oregon. Fisher resigned Friday to accept the opening at Texas A&M.
Taggart has a 47-50 career record, including 7-5 this season, but is known as a rebuilder. He arrived in Eugene after four years at South Florida, where he guided the Bulls from a 2-10 record his first year to a 10-2 mark last year and a spot in the Birmingham Bowl.
Before that he spent three seasons as head coach at his alma mater, Western Kentucky, inheriting a winless program that he turned around with back-to-back winning seasons.
This was the first time Florida State had to conduct a coaching search since 1975.
Curry sidelined with ankle injury
Stephen Curry will miss a minimum of two weeks after an MRI exam on his injured right ankle Tuesday revealed a sprain.
The Golden State Warriors said their leading scorer and two-time league MVP will be re-evaluated in two weeks. That means Curry is out for tonight’s game in his hometown of Charlotte, where the MRI took place.
Curry stepped on E’Twaun Moore’s foot and landed awkwardly on the ankle while going for a late steal in a 125-115 comeback win Monday night at New Orleans and left the arena using crutches and wearing a walking boot. He scored 31 points before the injury.
The defending NBA champions said the MRI indicated Curry’s ankle “is stable and structurally intact.”
Curry is averaging 26.3 points, 6.6 assists and 5.1 rebounds this season.
