HERSHEY – Senior Robert Kennedy rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns, passed for 143 yards and two more scores, and WPIAL champion Jeanette crushed Homer-Center 42-12 in the PIAA Class A football championship game Thursday at Hersheypark Stadium.
After Homer-Center (13-2) drove 93 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, Jeannette’s defense dominated the rest of the way. Homer-Center was held to 92 yards total offense in the first half and their two 1,000-yard running backs were held in check. Mike McCracken and Jesse Lee had combined for 2,475 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns entering Thursday, but they were held to 123 total yards and two scores by Jeannette.
Homer-Center didn’t score again until 6:52 was left in the game.
Lee scored the game’s first touchdown on a 7-yard run. Jeannette (15-1) then reeled off 20 unanswered points – touchdowns runs of 56 and one yards by Kennedy and a 25-yard scoring pass to Zack Berginc – before halftime. Jeannette defensive back Marcus Barnes intercepted Ben Schmidt in the first minute of the third quarter and that led to a 29-yard scoring strike from Kennedy to Tre Cunningham to give the Jayhawks a 29-6 lead.
Jeannette is the first WPIAL team to win the Class A title since Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in 2013.
Erie Prep 38, Imhotep Charter 28: Erie Cathedral Prep won its fourth PIAA championship and second in a row by defeating Imhotep Charter 38-28 in the Class 4A title game.
Erie Prep (14-0) trailed 13-7 in the second quarter but the Ramblers’ Billy Lucas rushed for 97 yards and three touchdowns, and Erie Prep scored 24 unanswered points.
