Cabrera & son lead Father-Son Challenge

Two-time major champion Angel Cabrera and Angel Cabrera Jr. birdied their last three holes for a 13-under 59 to take a one-shot lead Saturday in the PNC Father-Son Challenge.

Cabrera, a Masters and U.S. Open champion, is making his debut in this popular 36-hole scramble. His son said he practiced hard for 10 days and was certain playing front of cameras. What helped put him at ease was watching his father make so many putts.

“We combined very well,” Cabrera said. “When I hit a bad shot, he hit a good one. That’s the key.”

They had a one-shot lead over Mark O’Meara and Shaun O’Meara, who are playing for the first time. That included a birdie on the last hole, which O’Meara attributed to the strength of his son.

“My little man hit it 58 yards by me on the 18th,” said O’Meara, the Masters and British Open champion in 1998. “It’s a little easier coming in with a 6-iron.”

Defending champions David Duval and Nick Karavites rallying over the back nine at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club for a 61. They are trying to become the first father-son team to repeat as winners since Bernhard and Stefan Langer in 2006. Larry Nelson won two years in a row in 2007 and 2008, but with different sons.

“I’d imagine we have to break 60 tomorrow to have a chance to win, but hey, stranger things have happened,” Duval said. “I’ve even one it myself.”

Duval shot 59 at the Bob Hope Classic to win in 1999 on his way to reaching No. 1 in the world that year.

Duval and his stepson were tied with Bernhard Langer and 17-year-old Jason Langer, who made two eagles on the last five holes. This Langer tandem won in 2014.

Jack Nicklaus, playing with grandson G.T., opened with a 68.

Wrestling

McGuffey High School’s wrestling team had a 3-2 record and finished in fifth place Saturday at the Moon Duals held in Coraopolis.

The Highlanders routed Ambridge (68-4) and Montour (66-16) and handled Mt. Lebanon (48-30). McGuffey’s two losses came against Hempfield (44-21) in the Highlanders’ opening match and to Upper St. Clair (42-30).

In the NBA

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope missed the team’s loss Thursday night in Cleveland because of travel restrictions from his drunken driving arrest last season while with the Detroit Pistons.

“This is a legal matter, stemming from an incident that occurred last season while Kentavious was a member of another NBA team,” the Lakers said Saturday in a statement The Los Angeles Lakers are abiding by the terms of a program for Kentavious that were established for him by a court in the state of Michigan. As such, we will have no further comment at this time.”

  • CJ McCollum had 25 points, Damian Lillard flirted with a triple-double and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Charlotte Hornets 93-91 on Saturday night for their third straight road victory.

Lillard had 18 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds.

Nic Batum had a season-high 23 points for the Hornets. They have dropped 10 of their last 12 games, including five straight at home.

  • LeBron James had 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his 60th career triple-double and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the short-handed Utah Jazz 109-100.

James had his fifth triple-double of the season and third in his last four games. He had 10 points in the fourth quarter, was 9 of 15 from the field and 10 of 10 at the foul line.

Cleveland has won 17 of 18 overall and 11 straight at Quicken Loans Arena.

Center Rudy Gobert (sprained ligament and bone bruise in left knee) and forward Derrick Favors (left eye laceration) were out for Utah. Both were injured during Friday night in a win in Boston.

Rookie Donovan Mitchell led the Jazz with 26 points, making 10 of 15 from the field. Utah made 17 of 34 3-point attempts.
