Sills returning
to West Virginia
West Virginia wide receiver David Sills is returning for his senior season in 2018.
The Mountaineers announced in a statement Monday that Sills is coming back, keeping West Virginia’s dynamic pass-and-catch combination intact for another year. Quarterback Will Grier announced last week that he’ll return as well.
Sills had 60 catches for 980 yards and a nation-leading 18 touchdowns in the regular season. He was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award and was named an Associated Press honorable mention all-American.
Sills says, “WVU holds a special place in my heart, and I am looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish next year.”
West Virginia (7-5) plays Utah (6-6) Dec. 26 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.
Wild Things sign outfielder
The Wild Things have signed outfielder Austin Crutcher, a former Chicago White Sox farmhand and the 2016 Co-Most Valuable Player of the independent United Shore Professional Baseball League, for the 2018 Frontier League season.
Crutcher played his college baseball at Bellarmine (Ky.), then 301 with 15 home runs and 19 stolen bases in 48 games for Utica of the USPBL. He played in 43 games for the White Sox in the rookie-level Arizona League last summer.
Patrick, Stenhouse end relationship
Danica Patrick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. have split as a couple after nearly five years. A spokeswoman for Patrick confirmed to the Associated Press on Monday that the drivers are “no longer in a relationship.”
Patrick didn’t attend the season-ending awards ceremony last month in Las Vegas with Stenhouse, who was honored for making NASCAR’s playoffs in 2017. That led to speculation about the most high-profile couple in motorsports.
Patrick and Stenhouse announced they were dating in early 2013. She confirmed that by telling the AP: “I have a boyfriend, his name is Richard.”
It was an unconventional pairing. They raced against each other weekly, and over the course of their relationship they clashed competitively, leading to post-race disagreements.
Patrick is 35 and had been previously married before she began dating Stenhouse. He recently turned 30.
She has made no secret of a desire to marry again, and revealed in a recent documentary directed by Hannah Storm she has frozen eggs in case she decides to have children one day.
Patrick is retiring as a full-time driver and hopes to end her career next year by racing in the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500. It’s an outgoing celebration she has dubbed the “Danica Double.”
Her 90-day fitness plan book “Pretty Intense” will be released next week.
Davis suspended
2 games for hit
The NFL has suspended Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis for two games following his helmet-to-helmet hit on Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams.
Adams left Sunday’s game in the third quarter with a concussion after being blindsided by Davis following a Carolina interception. Davis was penalized 15 yards, but not ejected. Davis, the 2015 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year, was visibly upset on the sideline after the play.
In the NBA
Terry Rozier’s steal and dunk with 1.5 seconds left capped a frantic comeback in the final half-minute that gave the Boston Celtics a 112-111 victory over the Indiana Pacers Monday night.
Kyrie Irving scored 30 points for Boston, which trailed 107-102 after Victor Oladipo’s basket with 31 seconds remaining.
