Knab, Rice garner PAC honors
Waynesburg University senior forward Jon Knab was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Player of the Week, while Grove City’s Justice Rice, a Monessen graduate, earned Rookie of the Week honors.
In Waynesburg’s two victories this week against Hilbert and Muskingum, Knab averaged 24 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Rice reached double-digit scoring for the second time in his early college career with 14 points in Grove City’s 74-50 win over Mount Aloysius. He went 5-of-9 from the field, including three three-pointers in his 21 minutes.
Waynesburg edges Burrell
Waynesburg High School’s wrestling team used a pin by Kyle Homet and a decision victory by Luke Robinson in the final two bouts of the night to defeat defending WPIAL Class AA champion Burrell 36-31.
Homet’s pin in only 15 seconds came at 182 pounds and was his 100th career victory. It also gave Waynesburg a 33-31 lead heading into the final bout of the night, where Robinson won a 5-2 decision to secure the win for the Raiders.
Heavyweight Ryan Howard had a pin for Waynesburg and Wyatt Henson (120) and Jackson Henson each won bouts with technical falls.
Burrell had used falls at 160 and 170 to take a four-point lead.
Ohio rolls over UAB
Dorian Brown rushed for a career-high 152 yards and four touchdowns, Nathan Rourke threw for two scores and Ohio beat UAB 41-6 in the Bahamas Bowl Friday.
Ohio (9-4) averaged 38.9 points per game during the season, setting a school record with 467 points scored, and the Bobcats exhibited that prowess in the opening half of this one, using big plays to build a 27-3 halftime lead.
That was too much for the Blazers, a feel-good team seeking its first bowl victory on just its second try. The loss spoiled the end of a remarkable first season back for UAB (8-5), which was predicted to struggle and didn’t.
Brown, a redshirt senior, scored on runs of 74, 9, 25 and 14 yards.
Allen sparks Wyoming
Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes in his final game for Wyoming, and the Cowboys took advantage of Central Michigan’s eight turnovers to cruise to a 37-14 victory Friday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
During the postgame award ceremony, the game MVP award declared his intention to give up his final season of eligibility to enter the NFL draft. Wyoming (8-5) rebounded after losing its last two regular-season games with Allen sidelined by a sprained right shoulder.
Allen was 11 of 19 for 154 yards with no interceptions. He showed off his arm strength on a perfect 45-yard pass that hit receiver C.J. Johnson in stride in the end zone.
Syracuse upset
Jaylen Adams scored 23 points, 21 in the first half, and St. Bonaventure withstood a furious Syracuse rally to win its first-ever game in the Carrier Dome in 11 tries, defeating Syracuse 60-57 in overtime Friday night.
The Bonnies (10-2) led by as many as 13 in the second half but Syracuse (10-2) closed regulation on a 15-2 run to tie the game at 53. Paschal Chukwu, a career 48 percent shooter from the foul line, tied the game on a layup and foul shot with 1:18 to go in regulation. Tyus Battle missed a potential game-winning layup with two seconds to go in regulation and Oshae Brissett missed a put-back at the buzzer.
Courtney Stocker scored five of St. Bonaventure’s seven points in overtime. Brissett appeared to give Syracuse a 59-58 lead with 12 seconds to go in overtime but was called for an offensive foul.
