At The Meadows

Arthur Pendragon unleashed a stunning uncovered move in the slop that catapulted him past the leader, Dapper Dude, and on to a 7-1 upset victory in Saturday’s $18,000 Winners Over $10,000 Life/Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.

Arthur Pendragon was fourth when Mike Wilder sent him after Dapper Dude. The 4-year-old Dragon Again-Western Realist gelding was on top in a heartbeat and scored in 1:53.2. To his credit, Dapper Dude did not let another horse pass and saved second, 6-1/4 lengths back, while Hawk’s Red Chief rallied for show.

Ron Burke trains Arthur Pendragon, who extended his career bankroll to $161,710, for Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Phillip Collura and Jack Piatt III.

After a Christmas break, live racing at The Meadows resumes Tuesday, when the card features a $15,000 total-pool guarantee for the Pick 4. First post is at 1:05 p.m.

In the NHL

Patrice Bergeron scored twice in the third period, helping the Boston Bruins beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 on Saturday for their fourth straight victory.

Brad Marchand had a goal and two assists and Tuukka Rask finished with 30 saves for Boston, which has won seven of nine overall. David Pastrnak and David Backes each had two assists.

Frans Nielsen scored Detroit’s only goal and Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots for the Red Wings, who lost despite outshooting Boston 31-25.

  • Mathew Barzal scored three times and Jaroslav Halak made 38 saves, leading the New York Islanders to a 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

The 20-year-old Barzal scored twice in the first period after Anders Lee got New York on the board 1:31 into the game. Barzal finished his first career hat trick with his 12th goal at 11:22 of the third.

The Islanders (19-13-4) had dropped two in a row and four of five. Defense has been an issue of late, with New York allowing three or more goals in 10 of its first 11 games this month.

In the NBA

DeMar DeRozan scored 29 points, Serge Ibaka had 17 and the Toronto Raptors beat the Philadelphia 76ers 102-86 on Saturday for their 10th straight home victory.

Delon Wright matched his season high with 14 points while Kyle Lowry and Jonas Valanciunas each had 12 for the Raptors, who have won six straight overall and 12 of 13.

Toronto is an NBA-best 12-1 at home and is 10-1 in December, second only to Golden State’s 10-0 mark this month.

Joel Embiid, Philadelphia’s leading scorer and rebounder, returned after missing the previous three games because of a sore lower back to play in Toronto for the first time in his NBA career. The oft-injured Embiid had missed his first seven career games north of the border, including one this season.

Embiid had 14 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes, but the 76ers lost for the 18th time in 19 meetings with the Raptors.

Dario Saric scored 17 points, Amir Johnson had 12 and Ben Simmons scored 10 for Philadelphia, which has lost five straight and nine of 10.
