Penguins recall Sprong

The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled forward Daniel Sprong from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.

Sprong, who was the Penguins’ top draft pick in 2015, has 18 goals, 10 assists and 28 points in 29 games this season. He ranks second in the AHL in goals.

Last season, Sprong was one of the highest scorers in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League despite missing time after recovering from shoulder surgery. He finished with 32 goals and 27 assists in only 31 games.

Forward Dominik Simon was re-assigned to Wilkes-Barre.

At The Meadows

For the second time in 10 days, Classicality turned back the challenge of Wind Of The North and won Saturday’s $18,000 Winners Over $10,000 Life/Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows.

On Dec. 20, Classicality pocketed Wind Of The North and drew away from him late. Saturday’s challenge was more serious, as Wind Of The North pulled even with Classicality into the final turn. But the 7-year-old Classic Photo-Penn Worthy Lane gelding reasserted in the lane for Brian Zendt and downed Wind Of The North by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:55 over a “good” surface. Lady’s Dude finished third.

Gettleman getting

to business

The New York Giants have fired Marc Ross, the team’s vice president of player evaluation for the last five seasons.

New general manager Dave Gettleman on Saturday announced the move, his first since rejoining the franchise.

Ross was with the Giants since 2007, serving six years as director of college scouting. Ross had been in charge of the Giants’ draft, along with previous GM Jerry Reese, who was let go this month.

Ross was one of four candidates to interview for the general manager position.

Among the players New York drafted under Ross were Odell Beckham, Jr., Sterling Shepard, Landon Collins and Jason Pierre-Paul.

The Giants also waived disgruntled right tackle Bobby Hart, who reportedly told coaches that he would not play in today’s finale against Washington.

Former Pitt offensive lineman and Fox Chapel High School graduate Adam Bisnowaty was promoted to the active roster from the practice squad.

In the NHL

Nashville left wing Filip Forsberg was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury Saturday before the Predators’ game against Minnesota, ending his regular-season and postseason consecutive games streak at 325.

Forsberg had 15:04 of ice time Friday night in a loss in Minnesota. His last shift ended with 8:40 remaining in the third period.

The Predators did not offer a timetable for Forsberg’s return. As a result of being placed on injured reserve, which is at least one week in length, Forsberg will miss at least three games.

In the NBA

Andre Drummond had 14 points and 21 rebounds, and the Detroit Pistons held San Antonio to its lowest point total of the season in a 93-79 victory over the Spurs Saturday night.

Playing without starting guards Reggie Jackson (right ankle sprain) and Avery Bradley (sore right groin), the Pistons defended gamely and never trailed. Reggie Bullock scored 22 points for Detroit and rookie Luke Kennard added 20 – both were career highs.

Kawhi Leonard scored 18 points for San Antonio, which shot 37 percent from the field and 5 of 26 from 3-point range.
