My dog and I both have a few pounds to lose, how can we get moving more?

Just like humans, dogs need daily exercise, and the benefits are similar as well. Just 30 minutes of activity daily can allow you both to feel better physically and mentally. If you’re bored with your same old daily walks, try allowing your dog to lead instead, and see where you end up. Some breeds also love tracking, so allowing them to sniff and choose their path can provide mental stimulation as well. Trying new activities and learning new skills is also a great way to move into a more active lifestyle. If you’re used to running or walking all the time, try bicycling. There are leash attachments for your bicycle that allow your dog to tag along as you ride. Agility courses are another fun way to interact with your dog. Obstacles can be set up in your yard, or even in your house if the weather isn’t cooperating. Above all, find something that you both enjoy, and you’ll strengthen your bond as you begin living a more active lifestyle.

I’ve been told that pet owners are happier, healthier and often more successful than those who do not have a pet. Is that true?

Studies have indicated that owning a dog, cat or even fish can have both mental and physical benefits. Petting or playing with an animal can release “feel good” hormones like oxytocin and serotonin, increasing your happiness while also lowering your risk of stress and depression. The Journal of Physical Activity & Health indicates that those with a pet often are more active, getting in daily walks and play time with their furry friends. Many diseases, illnesses and injuries can be prevented or managed by living a more active lifestyle. Also, research at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has shown that children growing up with a pet may be less likely to have autoimmune diseases, or allergies.
