Grants awarded

State Reps. Jason Ortitay, R-South Fayette, and Bud Cook, R-West Pike Run, recently announced Safe Schools Grants have been awarded to districts in the 46th and 49th legislative districts. Approximately $220,000 was awarded in the 46th, and about $104,500 in the 49th. Receiving grants are the following:

  • Canon-McMillan School District – Safe Schools Equipment Grant – $19,204
  • Intermediate Unit 1 – Safe Schools Equipment Grant – $20,000
  • Western Area Career and Technical Center – Safe Schools Equipment Grant – $19,500
  • Burgettstown Area School District – Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grant – $40,000
  • North Strabane Township Police Department, on behalf of the Canon-McMillan School District – Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grant – $60,000
  • Trinity Area School District – Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grant – $40,000
  • Charleroi School District – Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grant; Safe Schools Equipment Grant – $45,753; $20,000
  • Mon Valley Career and Technical Center – Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grant – $18,799

Greene County

plans holiday events

Greene County Department of Recreation will host two holiday events.

Breakfast with Santa will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 2 in the lower level of the 4-H Building at Greene County Fairgrounds. Admission is $8 per person and includes breakfast catered by the Greene County Career & Technology Center Culinary Arts program. Children will receive a picture with Santa, festive headwear, a special treat and decorate a cookie Christmas tree ornament. A mailbox and letter-writing station for letters from Santa will be available during the breakfast.

Through the Letters from Santa program, children may send a letter to Santa in care of the Department of Recreation and receive a personalized letter from Santa just before Christmas.

Parents are requested to send a completed letter request form with the child’s letter by Dec. 12 to Greene County Department of Recreation, ATTN: Santa Claus, 107 Fairgrounds Road, Waynesburg, PA 15370. The form includes the child’s contact and basic information including gender, age and any gifts requested from Santa. “Dear Santa” templates and letter request forms are available at www.co.greene.pa.us.

There is no fee. Requests are limited to one per child.

The holiday activities are sponsored by the Greene County commissioners, Department of Recreation, Hartley Inn, Lola Energy and Rice Energy. For more information, call 724-852-5323.

Carnegie Science Center is accepting nominations now for the 22nd annual Carnegie Science Awards, which will be conferred May 4 at Carnegie Music Hall, Oakland. Nominations must be submitted by Nov. 30 to www.carnegiesciencecenter.org/carnegie-science-awards.

Every year, Carnegie Science Awards honor a select number of deserving organizations and individuals across the region – researchers, entrepreneurs, educators and innovators. Their stories showcase Pittsburgh’s excellence in science and technology achievements.

For two decades, the Science Center’s award ceremony has celebrated the accomplishments of more than 550 individuals and organizations for the region’s most prestigious science awards.

Awards categories include: Leadership in STEM Education, Leadership in Career and Technical Education, Elementary through University Educators, University/Post-Secondary Student, Corporate Innovation, Entrepreneur, Start-Up Entrepreneur, Environmental, Emerging Female Scientist, Information Technology, Innovation in Energy, Life Sciences, Science Communicator and Advanced Manufacturing and Materials.
