Waynesburg loses high-scoring game
The Waynesburg University men’s basketball team made 14 three-pointers but they weren’t enough to offset a huge disadvantage at the free-throw line as Fredonia rallied in the second half to beat the Yellow Jackets 89-81 in a nonconference game Wednesday evening at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Waynesburg (0-3) was 14 of 31 from three-point range but Fredonia was able to wipe away a 15-point deficit in the final 13 minutes. Fredonia (1-3) made 24 of 32 free throws compared to only five of 10 for Waynesburg. The Blue Devils also dominated on the boards, outrebounding Waynesburg 41-27.
Waynesburg used a 13-0 run to open a 45-36 lead at halftime. The Yellow Jackets stretched the gap to 15 points at 65-50 with 13:03 remaining.
Fredonia then began chipping away at the deficit and tied the score at 72-72 on a layup by Kay Johnson with 3:36 left. The Blue Devils took their first lead since the opening half about a minute later on two free throws that made it 76-74 and stretched the gap to 84-74 as Waynesburg went more than five minutes down the stretch without a field goal.
Jon Knab led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points. Matt Popeck followed with 18 points and four three-pointers. Nate Gearhart scored 12 points, all on three-pointers.
Jackson scored 21 points to pace four Fredonia players in double figures.
H.S. football players charged with rape
Three high school football players have been charged with raping a 14-year-old girl at gunpoint after she left a Pennsylvania town fair.
The York Daily Record reports the 16-year-old boys from the Central York High School football team are charged as adults.
The girl said she was with friends at the York Fair Sept. 16 and the boys followed them.
She said when she left the fair she was “taken to unknown locations” and was “forced” to have sex with the boys.
West York police said two of the boys were picked up without incident Tuesday and the third arranged to surrender. The boys’ relatives have declined to comment.
The school district says what happened was “a non-school related issue” and it has no comment on the police investigation.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 11.
