Duquesne women win

Chassidy Omogrosso tied her career with 25 points and took home Most Valuable Player honors as Duquesne finished the Cavalier Classic 2-0 after their 74-63 victory over Virginia on Sunday afternoon.

Julijana Vojinovic scored 22 points and Kadri-Ann Lass 11 for the Dukes (5-2). Paige Cannon has a career-high 15 rebounds along with eight points.

Virginia’s Aliyah Huland El scored 17 for the Cavaliers (3-4).

Omogrosso opened the game with a 3-pointer, but the lead would last less than two minutes. The Cavaliers would take an eight point lead at the 2:35 mark of the second quarter and hold a 32-29 lead going into halftime.

UVA would score the first two points of the 3rd quarter before back-to-back 3-pointers from Lass and Vojinovic gave the Dukes a 35-34 lead at 8:54.

The Dukes would stay ahead the rest of the game, stretching the lead to as many as 12 points at 62-50 with 3:50 remaining. Virginia was able to get the deficit down to four points with 40 seconds to play, but the Dukes made seven of eight free throws in the final 37 seconds to close out the game.

In the NBA

DeMarre Carroll scored a season-high 24 points, Trevor Booker added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and the Brooklyn Nets snapped a three-game losing streak night with a 98-88 victory over the struggling Memphis Grizzlies.

Joe Harris finished with 13 points for the Nets, who used a third-quarter spurt to put away the Grizzlies, who have lost eight straight.

  • Goran Dragic scored 24 points and the Miami Heat followed the lowest-scoring first quarter in team history with their highest-scoring one of the season to beat the Chicago Bulls 100-93.

After scoring seven points in the first quarter, Miami had 38 in the second to take a 45-42 lead.

Wayne Ellington added 19 points, James Johnson had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Hassan Whiteside had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jerian Grant led Chicago with 24 points. Denzel Valentine had 14 points and career highs of 13 rebounds and seven assists.

In the NHL

Ryan Strome broke a tie early in the third period and Cam Talbot made 23 saves in the Edmonton Oilers’ 4-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.

The Oilers won for the second time in six games and beat Boston for the sixth straight time after dropping the previous 13.

  • Jimmy Vesey scored the tying goal early in the third period and added the winner in the seventh round of a shootout to give the New York Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves to help the Rangers extend their winning streak to four games.

  • Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen scored in a shootout and the Carolina Hurricanes earned a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators on Sunday.

Aho beat Predators goalie Juuse Saros with a wrist shot over his blocker on Carolina’s second attempt.

After Hurricanes goalie Scott Darling stopped Filip Forsberg’s second attempt for Nashville, Teravainen lifted a backhand over Saros’ left shoulder for the winner.
