Waynesburg tops KO in volleyball

Waynesburg had a hard-fought battle but managed to come away with a five-set victory over Keystone Oaks in the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class AA volleyball playoffs Tuesday night at Baldwin High School.
The Raiders won the first set, 25-16 but Keystone Oaks tied it at one set apiece with a close 25-23 win.
Waynesburg won the third set, 25-20 but couldn’t close KO out in the fourth set, falling 25-21. In the fifth, and deciding, set, the raiders won 15-9.
This victory propels the Raiders into a first-round match against Seton-La Salle at 6 p.m. at Serra Catholic High School.
Abby Fisher had 5 aces, 25 assists and 12 points for the Raiders. Abby Gibbons chipped in 20 kills and 9 digs and Emerson Foringer had 10 digs, 3 aces and 8 points. Hanna Headlee and Riley Bowers rounded out the scoring with 5 kills each.
Beth-Center 3, Steel Valley 1: Beth-Center used a strong start, jumping out to a 2-0 set lead and knocked off Steel Valley, 3-1,in the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class AA volleyball playoffs Tuesday night at Baldwin High School.
The Bulldogs advanced to the first round, where they will take on Neshannock Thursday at 6 p.m. at Beaver High School.
The scores of the sets were 27-25, 25-14, 24-26 and 25-14.
It’s the second time in as many seasons that the Bulldogs have won their first volleyball match of the postseason.
In other matches: Laurel defeated McGuffey, 3-0, in a Class AA preliminary match at OLSH High School. No further information was made available to the Observer-Reporter.
