Mike Tomlin was extremely optimistic regarding the potential availability of defensive end Stephon Tuitt for Sunday’s home opener against Minnesota.

Tomlin said Tuitt is “day-to-day” and wouldn’t rule out the defensive end against the Vikings, saying it would come down to how quickly he regained the strength in his left arm.

The guess here is that Tuitt will sit out this week and possibly next week at Chicago before returning to the lineup in three weeks against Baltimore. But, again, that’s just a guess at this point.

I’ll dig into it more when I host a radio show with Tuitt from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight on WDVE. (A shameless plug for the show, which will be every Tuesday).

@ Tomlin was upset over the penalties his team incurred in Sunday’s win at Cleveland and rightfully so.

He was particularly upset with an unnecessary roughness penalty called on William Gay.

Tomlin, like me, felt Gay did, in fact, deserve to be penalized in that case. He hit Ricardo Louis in the facemask with his helmet.

But the official on top of the play did not throw a penalty flag until well after the play had occurred – when he saw it on the Jumbotron.

That’s not how things are supposed to work.

Why?

Let’s say, for example, that play were to have happened at Heinz Field. Do you think the stadium workers would have shown that replay on the big screen? Probably not.

Allowing that to happen puts the visiting team at a significant disadvantage.

The official in question should be reprimanded by the NFL.

@ The breakdown on the Steelers’ penalties Sunday were as follows: Five offensive holding penalties; one peelback block and one delay of game on offense; Four unneccessary roughness; one pass interference and one hold on defense.

The offensive holding penalties are things that can be corrected with practice and, in my opinion, were the result of guys perhaps not getting enough work in the preseason. JuJu Smith-Shuster had two, while Vance McDonald, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Maurkice Pouncey all had one each.

The delay was on Roethlisberger taking too much time to view the lay of the land pre-snap, though he thought he got the snap off in time.

Defensive holds could be called a lot, and the pass interference penalty on Sean Davis was a thing that happens in today’s NFL.

But the four roughness calls, one each against Gay, Ryan Shazier. T.J. Watt and J.J. Wilcox are ones that shouldn’t happen.

I will say this, however, the call on Watt was pretty weak given he didn’t appear to make contact with quarterback Deshone Kizer.

@ Speaking of Wilcox, he is now in concussion protocol, which isn’t susprising considering he looked to be knocked out during the game after his hit on Corey Coleman.

@ Tomlin said Le’Veon Bell needs to be better than he was Sunday but doesn’t believe it was because he missed training camp.

In fact, he got testy Tuesday when that was suggested.

“You can sign that Le’Veon Bell camp song all you want. He’s here, we’re working on getting ready to play the Vikings this week. I’m done with it.”

@ Tomlin was non-committal when asked about Bud Dupree’s status this week, saying that, at this point in the season, he’s not inclined to play someone who doesn’t make it through a whole week of practice.

The Steelers also have a lot of faith in Anthony Chickillo.

@ Tomlin was happy with the way the defense stopped the run, his offense’s performance in the red zone and the way it closed out the game.
