In baseball

Charleroi defeated Monessen 9-3 in a non-section game at Wild Things Park. No other information was made available.

In college lacrosse

The Waynesburg University women’s lacrosse team lost to Hiram 25-1 in a non-conference game.

Julia Sipes scored the lone for the Yellow Jackets, who are 0-4.

Sierah Ray and Alexis Hirsch each scored four goals for Hiram (6-4).

At The Meadows

Shuffled to sixth at the three-quarters, Dance For Kisses roared wide through the lane to spring a 16-1 shocker in Monday’s $15,000 opening leg of the Ruby Cook Memorial Pace at The Meadows.

The series for 3-year-old fillies honors the memory of the late Ruby Cook, the track’s longtime switchboard operator.

Dance For Kisses hadn’t raced since Aug. 15 and had only a maiden victory to her credit. But when Bryce Brocklehurst angled her off the cones to the center of the track, the daughter of A Rocknroll Dance-Thirsty For Kisses caught the leader, E Dee’s Well Said, and downed her by 3/4 lengths in 1:57.

Dave Palone collected four wins on the 13-race card.

Knetzer receives weekly honor

Waynesburg University’s Addy Knetzer was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Field athlete of the Week.

Knetzer, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, broke her own meet and stadium record and won the shot put with a throw of 43-9 3/4 at Saturday’s Bethany Invitational. That distance currently ranks third in all of Division III.

She also posted the top D-III mark at the meet in the discus with a throw of 108-3, which was good for 10th place.

Cal pair honored

California University baseball player Levi Krause was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division Athlete of the Week.

Joining Krause with similar honors is Jacquelyn Fowler, an outfielder for the Cal softball team.

In a four-game sweep over Pitt-Johnstown, Krause, a third baseman, had six hits and nine RBI with three extra-base hits.

The four-year starter went 2-for-3, including a three-run home run in Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday against the Mountain Cats.

Fowler, also a senior, led the Vulcans to victory in a weekend sweep over PSAC opponent Gannon. She combined to go 3-for-5 in the two games. Her biggest hit in the two games was a game-tying home run in the seventh inning of Cal’s Game 2 comeback win.

Srbinovich lauded with award

Waynesburg University baseball player Tyler Srbinovich was honored as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.

Srbinovich started both games for the Yellow Jackets in a doubleheader split against Bethany Saturday. He went 4-for-9 with a home run and four RBI.

The freshman also made a difference on the mound for Waynesburg, not allowing a hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

PSU’s Carr declares for NBA Draft

Less than a week after helping Penn State win the NIT, Tony Carr is giving up his last two years of college eligibility and declaring for the NBA Draft.

The Philadelphia native was joined by his parents and coach Patrick Chambers in making the announcement Monday. He said he plans to hire an agent, which would disqualify him from being able to return to the Nittany Lions.

Carr led Penn State with averages of 19.6 points and 5.0 assists this season, earning All-Big Ten first team honors. He also became the first player in program history to reach 1,000 career points as a sophomore, finishing with 1,161.
