The Cleveland Indians’ decision to remove Chief Wahoo from their uniforms still isn’t enough for protesters who find the logo offensive.

After decades of protests, the team announced in January that beginning next season they will no longer have the smiling, red-faced caricature on their caps or jerseys. However, they will keep selling merchandise bearing the contentious logo.

Those moves coincided with the team hosting the 2019 All-Star Game.

Chanting, “Change the name, change the logo!” a group of two dozen protesters marched to Progressive Field on Friday before the Indians’ home opener against the Kansas City Royals.

One of the protest organizers was worried about violence against the group. It’s been asking the team to change not only its logo but nickname.

As the protesters peacefully carried signs saying “Less Wahoo? No Wahoo!” and “Sacred Symbols Are Not Toys,” they were met with fans yelling “Save the Chief” and other comments.

Michael Brantley singled home two runs in his first at-bat this season and Carlos Carrasco worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, leading Cleveland to a 3-2 win in their chilly home opener.

Brantley missed Cleveland’s first six games while on the disabled list recovering from offseason ankle surgery. But just hours after being activated, the two-time All-Star delivered in the first inning against Danny Duffy (0-2), who managed to hang around until the sixth.

Following devastating finishes in the past two postseasons, the Indians are hoping this is the year they end their 70-year World Series title drought, baseball’s longest.

Atlanta 8, Colorado 3: Brandon McCarthy pitched six solid innings and delivered a two-run double that chased German Marquez in the fifth inning of the Atlanta Braves’ 8-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on a frigid that marked the second-coldest game in Coors Field history.

It was 27 degrees when the Rockies’ home opener began after an hour-long delay caused by sleet and snow. That was just 4 degrees warmer than when these teams met in Denver on April 23, 2013, in the coldest first-pitch temperature in major league history.

Knebel to DL: Milwaukee Brewers All-Star closer Corey Knebel was placed on the 10-day disabled list and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks because of a strained left hamstring.

Knebel was walking with a limp Friday, a day after he was injured while pitching against St. Louis.

“Right from the start I kind of thought it was pretty serious, the way it felt,” Knebel said. “Then once I got home I started to kind of realize it doesn’t feel as bad. I knew if it was torn off the bone I wouldn’t be able to do anything, so it definitely was a little bit of a relief.”

Knebel had a 1.78 ERA and 39 saves in 45 chances last year, supplanting Neftali Feliz as closer in early May. Knebel struck out 126, tying Boston’s Craig Kimbrel for the most among major league relievers, and set a big league record by opening the season with at least one strikeout in 45 consecutive games.
