College softball

Washington & Jefferson scored only one run in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader against host Thomas More.

The Saints (6-0, 14-12) defeated the Presidents (2-2, 6-10) 6-0 in game one and 10-1 in a five-inning game two.

The only W&J run came from a Brooke McCleester home run in the last inning of game two.

Alix DeDreu earned the win in game one, improving her record to 9-4. DeDreu struck out 10 and allowed five hits in the shutout.

Mary Beth Odom belted two home runs, one solo shot and one two-run homer, to lead the Saints offense. Andrea Gahan also hit a solo roundtripper.

Taylor Andres was the losing pitcher in game one, falling victim to three homers in giving up six runs (two earned) in 6.0 innings. Andres is 5-4 on the season.

Hannah Sprague was the winning pitcher in game two, striking out for in her five innings, while Kristen Fuertes took the loss, allowing 12 hits in four innings.

Gahan homered again in game two, as the first baseman went 3-for-3 with three RBI.

Women’s volleyball

Waynesburg University hired Hayley Kirby to be lead the volleyball program. The new head coach replaces former 13-year head coach Stephanie Benkowski, who resigned earlier this year.

Kirby, a former Earlham College (Richmond, Ind.) assistant coach, comes to turn around a struggling Waynesburg program that has won one game in each of the last two seasons.

Kirby has experience in turning around programs. When she and Earlham head coach Lauren Horton arrived at Earlham, the two inherited a 4-24 team. Three years later and the Quakers went 15-13 with four Heartland Conference wins-the first conference wins for Earlham since 2009.

Kirby played at Sacred Heart Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and at Division II West Virginia State as an outside hitter.

Women’s lacrosse

Waynesburg University lost a home match against Westminster College 18-0.

The Yellow Jackets fell to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference.

Romie Schweickert and Emily D’Amico both led the Titans with five goals apiece. Nine different Titans score a goal in the win.

Waynesburg’s Christina Bauer made a season-high 22 saves.

Women’s golf

In her first event of the spring season, California University of Pennsylvania women’s golfer Sara Suazo tied for 24th overall at the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational at West Chester University.

Suazo, a freshman, shot a 33-over 173 (83-90) playing on the Penn Oaks Golf Club in her first collegiate match since October.

Boys lacrosse

South Fayette fell to Hampton, 12-2, in a home match. The Lions fell to 3-2 with the loss.
