High school baseball
South Park couldn’t find an answer for Belle Vernon starting pitcher Cole Naylor.
Naylor threw a no-hitter Saturday to defeat South Park, 2-0, in a Class 4A Section 3 game.
It was an efficient performance for Naylor, working ahead in the count on 19 of the 23 batters he faced. He finished with eight strikeouts.
Belle Vernon (4-1, 4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Joe Sabolek through the middle of the infield. The Leopards extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a double from Josh Hoffman that scored Jake Rathway.
A mainstay near the top of the section in years past, South Park (1-3, 6-4) has lost three of its last four games.
- Jarrod West pitched a complete game and went 2-for-4 to lead Washington to its first win of the season, 7-2, against Section 3-AAA opponent Southmoreland.
West, a freshman, surrendered two hits and struck out four. His single in the first inning also resulted in the opening two runs of the game for the Prexies (1-3, 1-6). Washington scored in four of the first five innings.
Southmoreland is 0-4, 0-6.
- Carmichaels scored six runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 10-3 victory over Bentworth in a Section 1-AA game. It was the fourth win of the week for the Mikes.
Each of the six runs scored by the Mikes in the fourth inning came with two outs, the final two coming on a two-run double by Dylan Wilson, giving Carmichaels an 8-3 lead.
Gavin Pratt, Al Cree, Nick Mundell and Wilson each had a multi-hit games for Carmichaels (4-1, 5-2). Steven Spehar was the winning pitcher, scattering eight Bentworth (0-5, 1-6) hits. He struck out eight.
Losing pitcher Jacob Maimone went 2-for-4 with a double.
- Peters Township starting pitcher Garrett Miller threw a three-hit shutout as the Indians defeated Class 6A Section 3 foe Baldwin, 8-0.
Miller only needed 85 pitches (64 strikes) for the complete game. He finished with eight strikeouts.
The Indians (2-2, 5-5) had six players with multi-hit games. Colin Caven went 2-for-3 with a double. Tom Colcombe hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to make it 6-0.
High school softball
Belle Vernon scored the only run of the game on a double from Jordan French in the third inning to defeat South Fayette, 1-0, in Section 2-AAAA.
Leopards pitcher Bailey Parshall held the one-run lead for the remainder of the game, giving up only two hits while striking out 13. Parshall also had four hits for Belle Vernon (3-2, 5-2). Marg Iagnemma and Aliya Schrader singled for South Fayette (1-3, 3-5).
College softball
Westminster extended its winning streak to 16 games Saturday by sweeping a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Washington & Jefferson 1-0 and 7-3.
Jazmyn Rohrer pitched a three-hit shutout for Westminster (9-0, 18-5) in the opener and Addie Dietrich drove in the game’s lone run in the third inning. W&J’s Taylor Andries pitched a four-hitter and did not issue a walk.
W&J (2-6, 6-14) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, but Westminster battled back.
- Waynesburg and Thiel split a PAC doubleheader. Waynesburg won the opener 4-3 before Thiel scored seven runs over the final two innings to win the second game, 10-4.
The Yellow Jackets (4-6, 11-13) made the most of only four hits in the opener. Winning pitcher Courtney Messenger gave up 12 hits but only two earned runs.
- California mustered only eight hits while being swept in a PSAC West Division doubleheader by Slippery Rock, 5-0 and 6-1. Cal falls to 5-3 in the PSAC and 11-1 overall. The Rock is 4-4, 17-14.
College baseball
Washington & Jefferson used 27 hits to score 27 runs in sweeping its first doubleheader against Chatham, 14-4 and 13-3, Saturday at Ross Memorial Park.
W&J is 9-1 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and 17-9-1 overall.
Nine different Presidents had hits in the seven-inning opener. Leadoff hitter Mullen Socha led the offense by going 3-for-4 with two runs, four RBI and a triple. Luke Zahren was 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two runs and an RBI. Bryce Schnatterly pitched the first 5 2/3 innings to get the win and improve his record to 5-0.
Zahren homered in the second game, and Joey Bolick went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Bolick also stole home. Ryan Sciullo also was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a triple. Pitcher Matt Heslin gave up one run over seven innings for his first win of the season.
- Waynesburg scored 27 runs but had to settle for a PAC doubleheader split with Saint Vincent. Waynesburg won the opener 16-10 before dropping the second game 16-11.
Waynesburg (3-7, 7-17) trailed 10-1 in the fifth inning of the opener before scoring nine times in the sixth inning. The Yellow Jackets’ Tyler Reis was 4-for-4 with a double, two-run homer and four RBI. Tyler Godwin hit a three-run homer and Brenden Kohan had a two-run shot, both coming in the big sixth inning. Pitcher Colton Uzzell was the winner in relief.
Saint Vincent (5-5, 9-13) scored nine runs in the fourth inning of the second game to forge a 10-2 lead. Justin Buberal homered for Waynesburg.
- Jared Kollar and two relievers combined on a six-hit shutout in the opener, and Tyler Sullivan drove in three runs in the second game, as Seton Hill swept a PSAC West Division doubleheader from visiting California, 2-0 and 7-4, Saturday.
Seton Hill (9-7, 15-16) swept the four-game weekend series from Cal (7-9, 18-15).
Kollar pitched shutout ball over five innings and was followed on the mound by Trinity graduate Don McWreath and Kenny Wells. Each threw a scoreless inning with Wells getting his second save.
Tyler Eritz threw a complete game for Cal in the opener, allowing only four hits and one earned run.
Men’s lacrosse
In a rematch from the last two Ohio River Lacrosse Conference tournaments, Transylvania defeated Washington & Jefferson, 12-4. W&J goalkeeper Noah Cohen stopped 27 Transylvania shots. Patrick Brunner scored two goals for the Presidents.
