Major leagues: Realmuto shines in return as Marlins rout Yankees

J.T. Realmuto homered and drove in four runs in his season debut after coming off the disabled list, leading Jarlin Garcia and the Miami Marlins to a 9-1 blowout of the sloppy New York Yankees Tuesday night.
Garcia (1-0) gave up one hit in five shutout innings, overcoming five early walks to win for the first time as a starter. Miguel Andujar doubled off the base of the left-center wall with one out in the fifth off Garcia – who held the New York Mets hitless for six innings last week at home in his first major league start.
One night after a 12-1 loss in the Bronx, the last-place Marlins (5-12) turned the tables to split the two-game series. The listless Yankees committed two costly errors in the first two innings as Miami built a 4-0 lead and finished 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
Slumping slugger Giancarlo Stanton struck out two more times and grounded into a double play, finishing 0 for 4 and drawing boos from Yankees fans again. Last year’s NL MVP, traded to New York in the offseason as part of a payroll purge by new Marlins CEO and former Yankees captain Derek Jeter, went hitless in his first series against his former team.
Stanton is 3 for 35 (.086) with 20 strikeouts at home this season.
American League
Detroit 4, Baltimore 2: Victor Martinez homered for the first time since August, and the Detroit Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
Martinez hit a two-run shot in the second, and Jeimer Candelario hit a tiebreaking triple in the fifth for Detroit. Francisco Liriano (2-1) allowed two runs and five hits in five innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
Baltimore managed only one hit off four Detroit relievers. Shane Greene pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
Trey Mancini hit a solo homer for the Orioles, who lost their fourth straight. Andrew Cashner (1-2) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings.
Toronto 11, Kansas City 3: Yangervis Solarte homered and drove in four runs, Randal Grichuk also went deep and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 11-3 in the opener of a doubleheader.
Solarte’s third homer of the season was a two-run shot off Erik Skoglund (0-2) into the second deck in the first inning. He has reached base in all 13 games he’s played, the longest on-base streak to start a season for Toronto since Jose Bautista’s 17-game run in 2016.
Texas 7, Tampa Bay 2: Matt Moore allowed an unearned run over seven innings in his first start against his former team and the Texas Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-2.
Moore (1-3), who went 39-28 with Tampa Bay before being dealt to San Francisco in 2016, struck out six with five hits and two walks. The Rangers acquired the left-hander from the Giants in December.
