High school baseball roundup: Ringgold, Belle Vernon tied for 3-AAAA lead

Ringgold and Belle Vernon moved into a first-place tie in Section 3-AAAA.
Ringgold smacked 14 hits and scored in all but one inning to defeat West Mifflin 15-5 in six innings Friday, ending the Titans’ five-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, Belle Vernon rolled at McGuffey, winning 12-1 in five innings.
Ringgold and Belle Vernon each are 5-1 in the section and percentage points ahead of West Mifflin, which is 6-2.
At Ringgold, the Rams’ Bob Boyer went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs, Luke Winterbottom had two hits and drove in three runs, Jake Mayer doubled and scored three times.
Ryan Varley had a triple for Ringgold (6-1 overall), and Koby Bubash, Josh Peters and Anthony Vavasori each doubled. Pitchers Chase Angotti and Peters combined on a three-hitter. Angotti had seven strikeouts as the Rams defeated the Titans for the second time this season.
At McGuffey, Belle Vernon used a pair of four-run innings and Jordan Hoffman’s three-hitter to stymie McGuffey.
Trevor Schrock led Belle Vernon at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and two RBI. Josh Hoffman also doubled and Garrett Greco was 3-for-3.
Luke Wagner had a double and two of McGuffey’s three hits. The Highlanders fell to 1-5 in section and 3-7 overall.
• With Canon-McMillan down to its final strike in the top of the seventh inning, Ian Hess hit a three-run double to the gap in right centerfield and scored one pitch later on Cam Weston’s single as the Big Macs rallied for a 4-1 victory over Upper St. Clair in a Class 6A Section 3 game at Boyce-Mayview Park.
USC (4-3, 10-3) led 1-0 in the top of the seventh when Hess delivered on a 3-2 pitch with two outs.
Zach Rohaley, the third C-M pitcher of the day, struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn a save. Brandon Kline faced only one batter, throwing four pitches to end the bottom of the sixth inning and get credited as the winning pitcher. Canon-McMillan starter Cam Weston struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings and allowed only three hits and a first-inning run.
The win improves Canon-Mac to 5-2 in section and 8-3 overall.
• Garrett Miller threw a five-hit shutout and Colin Craven belted a solo homer as Peters Township defeated Baldwin 4-0 in Class 6A Section 3.
Miller helped boost the playoff chances of the Indians (3-4, 6-7) by scattering five singles and three walks. He struck out four.
Craven blast led PT’s nine-hit attack. Dax Ploskina, Joe Ehland and Tom Colcombe each had two singles and scored a run.
Baldwin is 1-5 in section, 1-7 overall.
• Carmichaels moved into sole possession of first place in Section 1-AA with a 12-4 victory over visiting Bentworth.
The Mikes (6-1, 7-2) used five different pitchers, who combined on a five-hitter. Starter Logan Mayhle struck out five in two innings and reliever Dylan Wilson fanned four in two innings.
Gavin Pratt led Carmichaels at the plate with two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI. Al Cree had two singles and a pair of RBI.
Carmichaels forged a 5-0 lead after two innings, but Bentworth (0-6, 1-7) pulled to within 5-4 in the fourth. The Mikes secured the win by scoring three times in the fourth and tacking on four runs over the next two innings.
• After being held scoreless through three innings, Beth-Center erupted for 16 runs over the final four frames to roll over Frazier 16-6 in Section 1-AA.
Beth-Center (3-2, 4-3) trailed 4-0 after three innings but scored four in the fourth, two in the fifth and broke the game open with an eight-run sixth inning. The Bulldogs had eight different players drive in runs. Anthony Dellapenna led the way with a double and three RBI. Dylan Dingle had a triple, double and two RBI, Hunter Bowen smacked two doubles, drove in a pair and scored three times.
Frazier (1-3, 2-4) had 12 hits but the Commodores left 10 runners on base.
• Greensburg Central Catholic scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and remained undefeated in Section 2-A with a 19-3 five-inning win over Monessen in the second game of a doubleheader. GCC won the opener 11-1.
Thomas Voelker went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, three runs and three RBI for GCC (5-0, 5-2). Bryce Kurpiel had three singles and drove in four runs.
Marcus Tansmore had two hits for Monessen (2-3, 3-4).
In the opener, Antonio Cavallo threw a three-hitter and Kurpiel went 4-for-4 with a double and five RBI.
• Josh Colletti hit a line-drive, walk-off single to center field with two outs in the eighth inning to score Brian Price and give Chartiers-Houston a 5-4 victory over Burgettstown in Section 1-AA.
Colletti also was the winning pitcher with a pair of scoreless innings.
Trailing by one run in the seventh inning, Chartiers-Houston tied the game at 5-5 on a Noah Minney single that scored Colletti with two outs.
Dante Gianfrancesco had a double for Burgettstown (1-5, 2-5).
Jimmy Sadler went 1-for-3 and scored two runs for Chartiers-Houston (4-3, 5-4).
• Sophomore Cooper Sharp pitched a complete game and led Washington to an upset victory over Section 3-AAA rival Charleroi, 8-4.
Sharp struck out six and only allowed four hits.
Keaton Riley and Hunter Perry each had a double for Charleroi (4-2, 7-2).
Alex Crawford led Washington (2-3, 3-6) by going 3-for-4 with three RBI. John Griffin and Mike Allen each had two hits.
• Brandon Powell pitched 5 2/3 strong innings and hit a two-run home run to lead California to an 8-5 win over Section 1-AA foe Fort Cherry.
The Rangers held a 3-2 lead after five innings, then California (5-2, 5-3) scored a handful of runs in the sixth to take the lead for the remainder of the game.
Powell drove in four runs for the Trojans, who are tied with Fort Cherry (5-2, 5-2) for second place in the section behind Carmichaels.
Fort Cherry’s Hunter Terpack was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
• Hopewell used five consecutive hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to score five runs and defeat South Fayette, 10-6, in Class 4A Section 2.
The Vikings blew a five-run lead after two innings, then collected five straight singles to open the sixth before South Fayette (5-2, 7-4) could record an out.
Ryan Kokoski and Eli Snider each had three hits for the Lions, who had their four-game winning streak end.
Jake McGovern and Tyler Beck had a pair of hits for Hopewell (4-3, 6-6).
• Jeannette used four hits and two walks to score five runs in the fourth inning to avenge a one-run loss earlier in the season, defeating West Greene, 11-6, in Section 2-A.
The big blow in the fourth was a two-run double by Jeannette’s Drake Petrillo.
Derrick Miller earned the win on the mound for the defending WPIAL champion Jayhawks (4-1, 6-1). He had six strikeouts.
Christian Fox, Patrick Brady and Matt Gillin each had a double for West Greene (2-3, 3-4).
• Mapletown starting pitcher Brian Bogden shined under the lights at Wild Things Park and led the Maples to their first win, a 12-2 victory in five innings over Geibel in Section 2-A.
Bogden struck out nine and limited Geibel to four hits.
Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the third, Mapletown (1-4, 1-6) exploded for four runs. The Maples then scored six runs in the fifth to end the game.
Kevin Hayes had a double for the Maples. Bogden helped his own cause with a triple.
The lone extra-base hit for Geibel (0-4, 0-5) was a double by Isaiah Krizner.
