High school baseball
Logan Kulikowski drove in 2 runs in a 3-run sixth to help send Frazier to a 4-3 victory over Chartiers-Houston in a Section 1-AA game.
The game ended when Chartiers-Houston hit into a double play with the bases loaded in the seventh. The Bucs flew out and the runner on third was called out for not tagging up on the play.
Jacob Olbrys drove in a run, and Mason Kelly, Josh Skotnicki and Timmy Sedock each had two hits for Frazier (2-5, 3-6).
Jimmy Sadler, Josh Colletti, Matt Whitfield and Cam Hanley each had two hits for the Bucs (5-4, 6-5). Colletti, Hanley and Austin Kuslock each had an RBI in a 3-run sixth.
Both teams left 8 players on base.
- Seth Arnold doubled and drove in 3 runs and Burgettstown scored in all but one inning in 9-4 victory over Beth-Center in Section 1-AA.
Winning pitcher Scott Ferris had 2 doubles for the Blue Devils (4-5, 5-6).
Dylan Dingle went 4-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI for Beth-Center (3-4, 4-5).
- Tyler Bedillion pitched a complete-game shutout as South F
- ayette defeated Class 4A Section 2 opponent Central Valley, 9-0.
Bedillion was efficient on the mound, only needing 94 pitches (67 strikes) for the victory. He stuck out five and scattered six hits.
South Fayette (7-2, 8-4) was able to build Bedillion a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Christian Gabriel hit a two-run homer for the Lions.
Mitch Dunay went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead South Fayette, which has won six of its last seven games.
Central Valley continues to slide in the section standings after its fifth straight loss, falling to 4-5 in the section and 6-5 overall.
- Monessen starting pitchers Nick Baker and Cam Frolo put together a pair of solid outings as they only combined to allow two hits as the Greyhounds won both games of a Section 2-A doubleheader against Geibel Catholic, 11-0 and 12-2.
Baker pitched all five innings in Game 1, striking out nine batters and allowing just one hit and one walk. He also had a pair of hits, including a double, and three RBI.
Frolo had eight strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in Game 2, surrendering only one hit and walking three batters.
Antonio Rhome, Nate Lynch, Baker and Frolo each had two hits for Monessen (5-3, 6-4).
Geibel falls to 0-8 in the section and 0-9 overall.
- Four players had a pair of hits as Bethel Park won its fifth straight game, defeating Peters Township, 9-1, in a Class 6A Section 3 contest.
Justin Meis, Sean McGowan, Korey Patterson and Kevin Kogler led the offensive outburst from the Black Hawks. Meis earned the victory on the mound for Bethel Park (7-1, 8-3), scattering seven hits and striking out four over six innings.
The top three hitters for Peters Township (4-5, 7-8), Kyle Comini, Dax Ploskina and Luke Mary, combined to go 6-for-10, but the Indians failed to get any production from the rest of their lineup.
- Zach Pettit hit a pair of doubles, Devon Jameson had nine strikeouts and West Greene used a four-run fourth inning to defeat Mapletown, 8-3, in a Section 2-A game.
The Pioneers added another three runs in the sixth inning to build a seven-run cushion, 8-1, too much for Mapletown (2-5, 2-7).
Ethan Carter had a double for the Maples, who didn’t help starting pitcher Brian Bogden by committing three errors. Bogden gave up eight runs but only three of those were earned.
Jameson went six strong innings on the mound for West Greene (3-4, 3-4), scattering five hits and giving up two runs (one earned). He also recorded nine strikeouts.
- Kyle Jones hit two doubles to lead Mt. Pleasant to a 14-6 victory over Washington in a Class 3A Section 3 game.
Jordan Swart hit a double and drove in three runs for Washington (3-5, 4-8).
Mt. Pleasant (6-2, 6-3) capitalized on six errors committed by the Prexies.
High school softball
Kourtney Gavatorta and Mekenzie Sokol each had a pair of hits, Bailey Parshall turned in another dominating performance in the circle and Belle Vernon handed Class 4A Section 2 foe Elizabeth Forward its second loss of the season, 3-2, in eight innings.
Elizabeth Forward defeated Belle Vernon, 11-3, in the second game of the doubleheader.
In Game 1, Parshall pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts.
Elizabeth Forward (5-2, 11-2) mounted a comeback in the seventh with a pair of runs to tie the score at 2-2 send the game into extra innings. Cassidy Kern hit a run-scoring double and Bri Sersevic hit an RBI single for the Warriors.
Alex Sokol, Mekenzie Sokol and Parshall each had a double for Belle Vernon (6-2, 9-2).
• Kaitlyn Pavlick had a day to remember for South Park, hitting three home runs and driving in 10 runs to lead the Eagles to a 17-7 victory over Waynesburg in a Class 3A Section 3 game.
Pavlick’s memorable performance was only the beginning of a successful offensive day for the Eagles, who had 20 hits as a team.
Kelli Mesick also hit a two-run homer for South Park (7-0, 7-1).
Sydney Hare hit a three-run home run for Waynesburg (4-3, 6-6) in the sixth inning.
- Kylie Poland hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning that was enough to lift Trinity to a 2-1 victory over South Fayette in a non-section game.
Trinity pitcher Reagan Perry settled down in the circle after giving up a run in the first inning. She allowed six hits and earned the win.
Bailey Bell hit a double for Trinity (10-5).
South Fayette falls to 3-8 overall.
- Leah Lindley had an impressive day in the batter’s box and pitching circle for Bentworth, throwing seven scoreless innings to lead the Bearcats to a 4-0 win over Class 2A Section 3 foe Fort Cherry.
Lindley struck out eight and went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kaylie Anderson had a double and Emma Fadler hit a triple for Bentworth (5-2, 8-3).
Macey Roble suffered the loss for Fort Cherry (1-6, 2-7).
- Emi Curcio hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning as Frazier defeated Chartiers-Houston, 5-4, in a battle of the two top teams in Class 2A Section 3.
The Bucs committed a pair of errors in the final inning to lead to the winning run scoring.
Trailing 4-2 entering what looked to be its final at-bat, Chartiers-Houston (5-2, 9-2) scored a pair of runs on a single from Ella Brookman to send the game to extra innings.
Kasey Scears and Jaylese Lombardi each had two hits for the Bucs.
Logan Hartman led Frazier (7-0, 8-4) with 14 strikeouts in the circle. She also had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs.
- Kate Hondru and Anna Chapman combined to pitch five strong innings as Peters Township defeated Brashear, 13-1, in Class 6A Section 1 game.
Anna Zierden had a double for PT (4-3, 6-6).
Brashear is 0-7 in the section and 0-8 overall.
- Jefferson-Morgan needed eight innings to California, 8-4, in a Section 2-A game.
Marlee Renner collected three hits for the Trojans, who fall to 1-7 in the section and 1-8 overall.
Jefferson-Morgan is 2-5 in the section and 3-5 overall.
- Megan Walker went 3-for-5 and drove in 4 runs to pace Carmichaels to a 20-0, five-inning victory over Avella in Section 2-A.
Winning pitcher Kylie Sinn had a three-run home run and drove in 5 runs for the Mikes (5-2, 8-4). Emily Menhart had a double and 3 RBI, Emma Holaren doubled and tripled, Madison Ellsworth doubled and Gina Ranieri had a triple.
Emily Pollock doubled for Avella (0-6, 0-8).
- McKenzie Crile pitched and hit Beth-Center to an 8-4 victory over Burgettstown in Section 3-AA.
Crile struck out 12 and homered for the Bulldogs (2-5, 2-6). Paige Moore tripled.
Tori Carnes struck out 11 but gave up 11 hits for Burgettstown (1-6, 1-9).
Pony baseball
Ace Sporting Goods defeated McGuffey, 9-3, in a Washington Pony baseball game.
Michael Shallcross earned the win on the mound. Connor Roberts went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple.
In college baseball
The Washington & Jefferson baseball team suffered a 7-0 defeat to Baldwin Wallace in nonconference action on Thursday night.
The loss drops the Presidents to 21-11-1 overall this season while the Yellow Jackets improve to 24-9.
Jacob Bonner drove in two runs and Trent Kaltenbach went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and drove in one.
Spencer Howell had two hits for W&J.
In college softball
Freshman Addy Helffrich connected on her first career grand slam as part of a five-run third inning in Game 1 as the Washington & Jefferson softball team swept Waynesburg at Brooks Park.
The Presidents won a six-inning 8-0 win in the opener before securing a 5-3 victory in the night cap to improve to 11-17 overall and 7-9 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
Helffrich’s grand slam to left field came on an 0-1 count with one out and followed consecutive singles by second baseman Rachel Johnson, center fielder Dana Parker and pitcher Taylor Andres that loaded the bases.
In Game 2, Kockha had another solid game, going 3-for-4 with a double in the night cap, and McCleester had a pair of doubles in going 2-for-4 with two runs. Smith and Parker each contributed a pair of hits, and Johnson added a double.
In college track
The Washington & Jefferson men’s track and field team finished fourth out of 10 teams and the women came in fifth out of nine at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
Harley Moyer led the way for both squads, finishing as the PAC champion in the 10,000-meter run (32:18.12), the 5,000-meter run (15:12.12) and the 1,500-meter run (4:01.84). Moyer earned Most Outstanding Performer from the Track and Most Outstanding Performer for his efforts.
Dwight Nelson earned gold in the 400-meter hurdles (56.22). Krista Sudar won the discus (124-4) and was fifth in the shot put (35-07). Haley Maglin was runner-up in the javelin (115-5) and Hannah Lacey took second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.95) and third in the 400-meter run (1:01.14).
In the NBA
Milwaukee forced a Game 7 with its series with Boston as Giannis Antetokoummpo scored 31 points while Malcolm Brogdon and Khris Middleton added 16 each in the Bucks 97 to 86 win.
Game 7 will be played Saturday night in Boston.
The winner plays Philadelphia in the next round.
