BASEBALL
• Junior Cam Weston hit three of Canon-McMillan’s six home runs as the Big Macs defeated Baldwin in five innings, 14-3, in a Class 6A Section 3 contest Friday afternoon.
Weston, a Michigan recruit, went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and eight RBI. Ian Hess, Nick Serafino and Greydon Piechnick all homered for C-M (7-2, 10-4). Hess also went 3-for-3, drove in three runs, scored four times and was the winning pitcher.
The lone extra-base hit for Baldwin (2-7, 2-9) came on a first-inning home run from Jordan Rush.
• Patrick Brady hit a pair of doubles and a home run to lead West Greene over Jefferson-Morgan, 8-6, in a Section 2-A game.
Tied 5-5 in the sixth inning, West Greene (4-4, 4-6) scored three runs, including an RBI double from Christian Fox. The homer for Brady scored all three runs in the third inning for the Pioneers.
The lone extra-base hit for Jefferson-Morgan (4-3, 5-3) came on a double from Zach Gamble.
The win for West Greene snaps a two-game losing streak.
• Burgettstown used steady offensive production from its lineup to score one run in five of the six innings it batted to defeat Bentworth, 5-2, in a Section 1-AA contest.
Cole Strain led the consistent effort for the Blue Devils, hitting a pair of doubles. Jose Noce also had a double and drove in two runs for Burgettstown (4-5, 5-6). That aided the effort of Seth Arnold, who only allowed three hits and struck out four to earn the victory on the mound, despite having five errors made behind him.
Justin Kisner and Isiah Russell each had a double for Bentworth (0-9, 1-10).
• Defending WPIAL champion Jeannette scored six runs in the second and 10 runs in the third inning to quickly defeat Mapletown, 16-1, in a Section 2-A game.
The Maples committed five errors and walked six batters from Jeannette (6-1, 8-1), which was then followed with a balanced offensive attack. Zander Malik, Tre Cunningham, Drake Petrillo and Derrick Miller each had a double for the Jayhawks. Tyler Elliot, who earned the win on the mound, had one hit but drove in three runs.
The lone hit for Mapletown (2-6, 2-8) was a single from Ethan Carter, who also suffered the loss.
• Brownsville scored 14 runs in the first inning and defeated Class 3A Section 3 foe Washington, 22-6, in three innings.
Seven of the 14 runs for the Falcons were unearned in the first inning. Washington (3-6, 3-9) committed eight errors in the game.
Mike Allen led the Prexies with a pair of hits and four RBI.
Dylan Brosky hit a grand slam for Brownsville (6-2, 7-2).
• Sevin Schoeneweis and Tony Tamilia limited Trinity to two hits over five innings as Moon defeated the Hillers, 15-1, to remain in second place in the Class 5A Section 2 standings.
The two pitchers allowed their defense to made plays behind them, only throwing 57 pitches through all five innings. Schoeneweis went four innings, allowing two hits and one run. Tamilia worked a hitless fifth to end the game.
Schoeneweis also led Moon (7-1, 7-3) at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI.
Trinity drops to 1-6 in the section and 1-7 overall.
SOFTBALL
• Erica Haught, Elika Mowery and MaKenzi Hollie each had three RBI as Canon-McMillan collected 14 hits to defeat Mt. Lebanon, 12-3, in a Class 6A Section 1 game.
The powerful lineup for the Big Macs generated eight extra-base hits, including five home runs. Haught led the way with two home runs. Katelyn Greaves, Mowery and Hollie each hit a homer.
Lindsay Schmidt went 3-for-4 and scored three runs for C-M (7-2, 8-2).
Cate Rogan went 2-for-4 for Mt. Lebanon (5-4, 5-4) but suffered the loss in the circle.
It’s the Big Macs four straight victory.
• Kaylee Ludwick hit a two-run single to spark a four-run fourth inning as Elizabeth Forward defeated South Fayette, 8-3, in a Class 4A Section 2 game.
Ludwick was one of four players to have a pair of hits for Elizabeth Forward (6-2, 11-2). Bri Sersevic, Cassidy Kern and Taylor Ludwick each had two hits. Jordan Pinneri led the Warriors by going 3-for-4 and scoring three runs.
South Fayette (1-6, 3-9) tied the game in the top of the third inning, 2-2, before giving up five runs in the next two frames to Elizabeth Forward.
Four of the Lions five hits were from Madison Potteiger and Ashley Micholas.
• McKenna and Madison Lampe combined for six hits to lead West Greene past Mapletown, 17-1, in a Section 2-A game.
Madison Lampe had two RBI as the Pioneers scored 13 runs in the second inning. Jade Renner had a single and a double, Kaitlyn Rizor hit three singles and Linzee Stover and Mackenzie Carpenter each had a pair of singles for West Greene (7-1, 10-3).
The lone hit from Mapletown was a double from Madolleen Grim. The Maples are 3-4 in the section and 5-4 overall.
