Shawn Kelley’s outburst on the mound got him booted from the Washington Nationals.
The Nationals designated Kelley for assignment on Tuesday, a day after he threw his glove to the ground and glared into the dugout while working the ninth inning of a 25-4 blowout of the New York Mets.
Manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo said Kelley’s actions were disrespectful and unprofessional.
The 34-year-old Kelley signed as a free agent with Washington in December 2015 and appeared in 135 games with the team. He had a 3.34 ERA in 35 appearances this season. He has pitched in 424 games, all in relief, over 10 seasons with four teams, and has a 3.73 career ERA.
Cespedes has surgery: Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes is set to have surgery on his heel Thursday, the first of two procedures that will likely sideline him from eight to 10 months.
The Mets announced Wednesday that Cespedes will have surgery to remove bone calcification in his right heel. Dr. Robert Anderson will perform the operation in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Cespedes will later have the same surgery on his left heel.
The 32-year-old outfielder hit .262 with nine homers and 29 RBIs in 38 games season.
Indians 2, Twins 0: Carlos Carrasco struck out 10 while taking a shutout into the eighth inning, winning his fourth straight start since returning from the disabled list to carry the Cleveland Indians to a 2-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
Carrasco (13-5), who missed three weeks with a bruised elbow before his reinstatement on July 6, has 63 strikeouts in his last eight starts.
This was his fourth turn with double-digit strikeouts, and he won his fifth straight decision. Carrasco picked up a victory with one inning of relief on July 15, right before the All-Star break.
Tigers 7, Reds 4: Jose Iglesias drove in three runs, Jim Adduci homered and the Detroit Tigers survived the loss of pitcher Mike Fiers to an early injury to beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-4 for a two-game sweep.
Fiers left after the second with a bruised left shin, sustained on a comebacker off the bat of Mason Williams.
Drew VerHagen (2-2) followed as the first of six relievers and pitched three scoreless innings. Shane Greene pitched the ninth for his 23rd save in 36 chances.
Iglesia hit a two-run double in the second, and Adduci had a solo homer in the fourth. Detroit made it 6-0 in the sixth when Ronny Rodriguez hit an RBI double and scored on Iglesias’s single over a drawn-in infield, and a throwing error by left fielder Phillip Ervin allowed in another run.
Athletics 8, Blue Jays 3: Sean Manaea pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Jonathan Lucroy drove in four runs and the Oakland Athletics completed a season sweep of Toronto, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 8-3.
Franklin Barreto homered and had three RBIs for the Athletics. Lucroy added three hits.
Manaea (10-7) bounced back from a shaky outing in Colorado and allowed one run while frequently pitching through traffic. He gave up five hits, struck out five and walked two.
Astros 8, Mariners 3: Marwin Gonzalez hit two of Houston’s four home runs, and the Astros knocked the Seattle Mariners from the lead for the second wild card in the American League with an 8-3 win.
Orioles 7, Yankees 5: Sonny Gray was chased in the third inning by the team with worst record in the majors, big league-loss leader Alex Cobb ended a nine-start winless streak and the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 7-5.
Nationals 5, Mets 3: Tommy Milone worked seven strong innings to get his first win in more than a year, Anthony Rendon homered and the Washington Nationals moved back above .500 with a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets.
