High school football roundup: Clutter scores 4 TDs, 2 on returns, in McGuffey rout

Christian Clutter scored four touchdowns four different ways as McGuffey cruised to a 28-0 victory over visiting Ambridge in the season opener Friday night.
Clutter got the season off with a bang for McGuffey by returning the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. That was all the offense the Highlanders needed as their defense held Ambridge to 198 total yards and 11 first downs. McGuffey also intercepted a pass and recovered a Bridgers fumble.
The Highlanders made it 14-0 in the second quarter when Clutter returned an Ambridge punt 42 yards for a touchdown. before the first half drew to a close, Clutter caught a 24-yard TD pass from marshall Whipkey to give McGuffey a 21-point lead. Whipkey completed five of nine passes for 72 yards.
Clutter capped the scoring with a one-yard plunge in the fourth quarter. The senior running back led the Highlanders’ ground game with 81 yards on nine carries.
Avella 14, Mapletown 12
Ty Jaworowski intercepted a pass at the 10-yard line with 1:31 to play to seal an exciting 14-12 victory by Avella over Mapletown in a nonconference season-opener for both teams.
Six minutes before the interception, Jaworowski scored the game-winner by catching a 44-yard touchdown pass from Owen English and Chase McAlpine kicked his second extra-point of the game to make it a 2-point lead for Avella.
Mapletown led 12-7 after Zach Greene ran for a 25-yard touchdown. He would finish with 180 yards on 32 rushes. Ethan Carter opened the scoring on a 6-yard run. The first of two conversion passes fell incomplete.
English, who rushed for 170 yards on 24 carries, scored on a 66-yard run in the first quarter.
Fort Cherry 20, Chartiers-Houston 13
Zach Vincenti rambled for 158 yards on 18 carries and scored twice to pace Fort Cherry to a 20-13 victory in a nonconference game in Houston.
Vincenti scored on runs of 64 and 1 yards for the Rangers, who rushed for 292 yards. Chase Belsterling carried 13 times for 129 yards.
Jimmy Sadler gave the Bucs the first lead of the game when he hauled in a 79-yard pass from Brady Whalen. But that would be the only score from the C-H offense.
The Bucs defense produced the final score of the game when he returned an interception 78 yards late in the third quarter.
Peters Township 43, West Toronto Prep 7
Ryan Magiske rushed for 50 yards and scored two touchdowns to help Peters Township drub West Toronto Prep, 43-7, in the Western Pa. vs. Everyone Showcase at Woodland Hills High School.
Adrian Williams rushed six times for 50 yards and scored on a 2-yard run for the Indians. Aidan McCall returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown and PT got a safety to start the scoring by sacking the quarterback in the end zone. Josh Casilli and Gabe Maloney also scored.
West Toronto Prep, in only its second year of existence, had 12 illegal procedure penalties and more penalty yardage than total yards. WTP finished with 83 yards but only 17 in the first half against the Peters Township starters.
Bentworth 34, Brownsville 14
Shawn Dziak had a hand in three second-half touchdowns as Bentworth rallied to down Brownsville, 34-14, in a nonconference game.
Dziak ran for two touchdowns and hit Trent Cavanaugh with a 10-yard scoring pass as Bentworth outscored Brownsville, 27-0, in the second half. Dziak completed 13 of 30 passes for 170 yards and Cavanaugh rushed for 175 yards on 18 carries and caught 7 of Dziak’s passes for 77 yards.
Lucas Harn rushed for 171 yards on 21 carries and scored on runs of 81 and 1 yards for Brownsville.
Waynesburg 47, Jefferson-Morgan 8
Nate Stephenson rushed 16 times for 155 yards and scored three touchdowns to help Waynesburg rout Jefferson-Morgan, 47-8, in a nonconference game.
Stephenson scored on runs of 2, 4 and 26 yards for the Raiders. Luke Robinson gained 42 yards on 5 carries and scored on runs of 2 and 18 yards. Caleb Shriver and Colby Morris also had touchdown runs for the Raiders.
Austin Foreman accounted for Jefferson-Morgan’s points on a 10-yard run in the second quarter.
Cameron 22, West Greene 14
Aidan Lucey passed for 177 yards and recovered a key fumble late in the fourth quarter as Cameron (W.Va.) defeated visiting West Greene 22-14 in the Pioneers’ season opener.
West Greene was driving for a potential game-tying touchdown when Lucey recovered a fumble at the Cameron 18-yard line with only 1:46 left in the game.
