Cal women

improve to 7-0

Seairra Barrett continued her strong start to her senior season by scoring a game-high 28 points to go with 10 rebounds and six steals, leading undefeated California to a 67-52 victory at West Chester in a PSAC women’s basketball game Sunday afternoon.

Barrett made 11 of 22 shots and six of eight free throws. Cal (2-0, 7-0) pulled away in the second quarter when it outscored West Chester 28-13 to open a 40-25 lead.

Cal protected the lead with its defense. The Vulcans forced West Chester (0-2, 4-5) into 26 turnovers. The Rams shot only 34 percent from the field.

Barrett was the only Call player to score in double figures. Abbey Sporio finished with nine points and six steals. Bianca Jasper had eight assists.

Cal men lose

Malik Jackson scored a game-high 24 points, including the 1,00th of his career, to help West Chester to a 91-64 victory over visiting California in a PSAC game Sunday afternoon.

West Chester is 2-0 in the PSAC East and 5-3 overall. Cal slips to 0-2 in the conference and 1-5 overall.

The Rams were in control from the outset, building a commanding 49-17 halftime lead.

Matt Penecale was the only other West Chester player to score in double figures. He had 10 points.

Brent Pegram led Cal with 20 points and eight assists. Jermaine Hall had 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Collin MacAdams scored 15 points. The Vulcans were hurt by 19 turnovers.

In the NHL

Pontus Aberg scored twice in the third period, including the go-ahead goal with 5:05 remaining, and the Anaheim Ducks stopped Washington’s seven-game win streak by rallying for a 6-5 victory over the Capitals on Sunday.

The Ducks trailed 5-1 in the second, but put together an impressive comeback to earn their fourth consecutive victory. Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and two assists and Rickard Rakell had a goal and an assist in the finale of a five-game trip.

In the NBA

Kyle Kuzma scored 23 points and LeBron James had 22 before both sat out the fourth quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ third home victory in four days, 120-96 over the struggling Phoenix Suns on Sunday.

Brandon Ingram scored 15 points and JaVale McGee had 14 points and eight rebounds in three quarters of work for the Lakers. They have won 12 of 16 since their 2-5 start to James’ first season on the West Coast.

  • Anthony Davis had 36 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists, and the New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Charlotte Hornets 119-109.

Jrue Holiday added 19 points and eight assists for the Pelicans, who won for only the second time in seven games. New Orleans led by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter and was never challenged in the second half.

  • Jimmy Butler continued his run as Philadelphia’s stretch-run shooter, scoring 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to lead the 76ers to a 103-95 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Butler hit winning shots against Charlotte and Brooklyn in eight days to quickly earn a reputation as Philly’s newest sharp shooter. Against a Memphis team trying to steal one on the road, Butler hit big buckets in the waning moments.

  • • Dwyane Wade made a pair of free throws with 3.2 seconds left for what became the winning scores, and the Miami Heat rallied from down 19 early to beat the Utah Jazz 102-100.

No. 2 UConn routs No. 1 Notre Dame

Freshman Christyn Williams scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting and No. 2 Connecticut never lost the lead after the 6:36 mark of the first quarter in dominating No. 1 Notre Dame 89-71 on Sunday in women’s college basketball.
